I have a remote setup and occasionally go to my router to connect. I take a Windows laptop with WinBox on it but the problem is my laptops battery life is rather crap.
Any plans for another version of WinBox that will work on ARM based devices such as the Surface?
You can already run Winbox on the Surface RT. Jailbreak the device and then search XDA for the x86 Emulator. This allows you to run small x86 program on the ARM surface RT devices. I tested Winbox and everything is working great. Plugable makes a USB to 10/100 Ethernet adapter. Microsoft forced the driver for the device to be removed but you can still find it.
If anyone wants more specifics let me know. You will need to Jailbreak the Surface RT and you will need to stay away from Windows 8.1 for a while.
I am really interested in running Winbox on the Surface RT. I haven’t purchased one yet due to the fact of not knowing if it was possible to run Winbox on it. My question is, if I purchase one now will it have 8.1 on it? And if so is it possible to downgrade it?
Another really important question I need answered before purchasing it, can you use an Ethernet/USB adapter to program router boards from scratch by MAC address?
No. If you purchase right now it will be older stock on have 8 on it. No, it is not possible to downgrade once 8.1 is on.
Yes, you can use an adapter. The only thing as dlesser has pointed out is Microsoft requested that the drivers be removed to limit any adapters to the Surface Pro. Just look around on the internet for them.
Please be aware of some guarantee problems when you jailbreak your device.
I don’t know much about it, but is has always been a discussion, also for Apple and Android devices
If you purchase the official MS USB to Ethernet adapter for the Surface, it will work on RT. The drivers are disabled by default, but are still on the Surface (you need 8.1).
To get around no WinBox for now, I just use a Telnet app to connect when taking my Surface to the remote router. If you want a web-based interface, make sure HTTP is enabled and use the web-interface.
