In default ROS setting, wireless menu “advanced”; (In the 802.11 mode) there is still a default suggestion that is not right;
The “Hw. Fragmentation Threshold” comes up with default value 256. This is wrong. It means that all packages bigger than 256bytes are broken down in such small packages. This creates a lot of overhead on the traffic. The value of default should be ‘1500’. which is the normal setting for ethernet traffic.
The “Hw. Protection Threshold” is left open to edit. Here actually the default value should be 256. Because that would force to always use the rts/cts mechanism to work, which in 99% of the cases improves the working of AP in PtMP networks. (It even helps in PtP networks if other interfering networks are disturbing signal).
According some study of the university of Tokyo (I have to look up the document) the extra overhead does not weigh up to the improved performance of the PtMP AP.
Now all this is not very important because in ‘all-MT’ networks the NV2 protocol is better and preferrend and than rtx/cts mechanism has no funcion. But when the small desktop/table wifi routers are used to connect laptops, tablets and smart phones etc. this does become important.
Now with the wrong default settings (introduced somewhere in the v3.xx series) these wifi routers will underperform when in use in multiple client networks…
Probably the skilled operator is aware of this and will adjust setting into better, but the ‘dummy’ that has no idea buys now a product that will not perform like it can…
Yeah yeah. Well, news for you; first thing probably most first time buyers will do is see what all the extra settings are. This forum if full of guys that are buying a MT wireless device only to find out that to create a good wireless network is not a simple as it looks. If now the software also puts you off the right track…
Regarding the version: As you can read this error is around since the 3.xx versions. Referring to an error in the OS makes no sence if it could already have been fixed in later versions. So it’s obvious error or fault discussions will probably go about one of the last, or the last version. I am talking 6.10 here if you really want to know…
And by the way, the hw-fragmentationn-threshold default value might be disabled but in enabling it without correction, it is a wrong one which will make crowded AP perform poor. The setting is invented to make AP performance improve. If you don`t know what the settings really do (like most starters) you might now be dissapointed in a product just because some ill default configs point you in the wrong direction…
Unfortunately, as RoS is more or less LINUX based AFAIK, you are asking for an absolutely revolutionary concept of “User Friendliness” for this SW-environment. Unknown so far, unless among old and experienced and great SW-developers, who also still remember and obey to the concept of “Egoless Programming” …
It’s most important know what one are doing (implicit: ALSO with forum support) than to find all default value, right for one or any person.
Another example: MRRU in 6.7 an previous version default value is disabled (NOT 512) but if you try to set the value, the system suggest 512.
Now on 6.10 the default value is active at 1600.
If you want help all user, improve the wiki, instead to open post here,
is more smart, I think.
I’ll bet there are more examples in ROS were defaults are not the best. This forum IS the best way to report and discuss real or fake errors found by ANYone or asking questions about it.
Nobody knows all and even the biggest experts sometimes do disagree on some settings.
By putting possible or real error in the config on this forum we can discuss them, learn from it and maybe MT will than correct them if others feel its needed too. So yes, apart from exchange between users what everybody is doing, it is also very helpfull if we discuss things about config in this forum. That’s what this forum is all about.
Ah, about wiki; Many posts there are often discussed on this forum. So, please before anyone posts anything in the Wiki test your ideas first on this forum. This filters the wike. Several posts on the wiki are still unfinished or need more explanation. That can only be done by discussing them on this forum…
