I’ve just bought a 411ah with a r52h mikrotik + 8db omni antenna combo and i am not happy with the results (low bandwidth for example).
I have no training in radio so my knowledge is limmited.
Can you guys make a wiki/help/documentation about using a mikrotik wirreless device indors.
Anything would be helpful: best practices, frequent mistakes, things to watch for, best setups…
mostly performance, on a/g bands with a intel 5100agn client.
i’ve tried various settings and device locations, only to realize that sometimes the strange things matter.
like what happens when the distance between the MT and the laptop is very small (50cm), i’ve found that reducing Tx power actually improvves performance.
I suspect that some of this info (if not all of this info) is scattered around this forum, but it is difficult to learn like this, and sometime i dont even know what to look for.
For now i am trying to understand the low ccq rate i am having: 90+ on idle, dropping to 10-20% on a transfer. I have a busy 2.4 spectrum (i’ve checked with MT and Inssider), and a free 5ghz spectrum.
ok.
I have an 411ah+r52h+8db omni antenna. I plan to replace 4 linksys AP with just this one (500sq meters on 1 maybe 2 floors with 20+ users).
I also plan to create a way so that our visitors to be able to acces the internet but not our internal network – i suspect a hotspot is the proper name.
So what i want is a steady performante (at least 1,5->2 mbytes/sec) for the area i want to cover.
I’ve configured the wlan interface with wpa2/aes, with routeros 5 rc1.
I’ve set the distance to ‘indoors’, i’ve tried 10&40mhz bands, but the intel 5100agn doesn’t seem to like it (i can’t see the MT network).
The performance i get is varying, aprox 1.7->2.2mb yes/sec on a file transfer via smb.
Using the bandwidth test from MT, i get, also, varying performance (tcp from mt to the laptop): 20mbps for a few minutes, then a drop to 14mbps. dunno why.
Using inssider (on a laptop with intel 5100agn, under 10m away, clear sight to the mt device) i can see that the MT device is not much more ‘powerfull’ then an linksys ap: ~50db mt/~55->60db linksys. am i doing smth wrong?
Can you post “/interface wireless registration-table”? There may be interference. Have you done a scan on that radio to see if any other radios nearby may be on or near the same frequency? “/interface wireless scan X”. Replace X with the radio line number.
i do not have (yet) a dedicated RF scanner, i used mikrotik or inssider for scanning, and yes i have some overlapping (mikrotik seens about 24 wireless networks, all 2.4ghz most of them around channel 6).
Change your channels if others are using 6 which most default does try using 9 or 11. Deacreasing TX power will improve performance because the wireless field created is only accessing your laptop and not getting overlapping fields from other AP’s. Having a Wifi Hotspot is discussed in detail in the WIKI. Spend some time with it
low ccq is bcos of interference caused by several AP’s using the same channel.
But if u r using a high mW card this can be come over. Also, which version of Router OS u r using?
Try configuring RTS/CTS keeping RTS as 512 and CTS as 768 has helped me a lot in my network.
Taken up the avg. CCQ for my clients from 35-40 to 85-90.
Guys keep in mind that not always a high Signal level like -45 is good, In my epxerience -45 is too much and try to regulate power / antennas / location to decrese this power to value -60, in my setups it fixed quality in the network
