wireless on Laptop

Hi,

Am new to this wireless area. Plz excuse me, if my question is dumb.

I have installed Mikrotik ROS on my compaq laptop. My requirement is I want to make it as wireless hotspot so that my wireless clients(mobile/laptop) can connect to it to get internet access. After installation, I am not able to find any wireless in interfaces section(using winbox to configure). For this, do I need to install any thing, or do I need to purchase any wireless card additionally?

Laptop is having a wireless card, when the laptop is having windows OS, I am able to connect to other Hotspots using that wireless card.

My doubt is, whether the wireless card that has come with Laptop is not enough? Will it not act as wireless signal transmitter?

Plz help in this regard…

Thanks in advance…

Maybe your wifi card is not supported or you installed it using some virtualisation?

Hello Jarda,

Thank you for your reply.
I have not used any virtualize time for this installation.

How would I know what kind of interfaces that mikrotik supports?
Can’t I use the same interface by any other means. ?
Thanks in advance. .

There is supported hw list on webpage. So check it. Why to bother with setting of huge electricity consuming laptop with weak wifi and bad antennas as ap if you can use whatever cheap small ap and set it in a simple way?

in terminal type / sy resource pci print and paste output
if you have Atheros wireless card then you should be good to go . Because RouterOS supports only atheros wireless chips
you also can try this http://routerboard.com/R11e-2HnD It will work in most laptops

Hello Kirstaps,

Below is the output of resource PCI.

Type of cooling - there are two options - active and passive cooling. If your laptop is not hot enough or you just need a stand for convenient use, then passive cooling will do.
