Working with Mikrotik and Netgear Prosafe Layer-2 switches

(Cheeky question)

I posted last autumn about trying to set-up a friend’s B&B in Croatia with Mikrotik router/access points but using a Netgear M4100 Prosafe layer-2 switch. Worked fine except couldn’t get the guest VLAN working through the switch. This was partly because of a middling understanding of VLANs and the fact that they just worked when I stick with a pure Mikrotik environment. It could be simply because I tried to use VLAN 1.

Anyway… they’re back on the case so I need to try and solve this. I’d like to try and reconstruct their set-up back here in UK so I need a Netgear layer 2 switch. I could buy a second hand M4100 off eBay but that seems a bit excessive. I don’t need a bit switch at home.

So the question, would this GS305EP have the same interface/configuration as the M4100?

I know this isn’t a Mikrotik question as such (sort of related) but I’ve always found the crowd here very knowledgeable about all sorts of networking kit.

Looking at it seems like a viable basic smart managed switch. Does VLans just fine and yes don’t use vlan1 to pass data.
Use tagged ports to pass vlans between smart devices.
Use access port so pass vlans untagged to dumb devices
Use pvids on access ports
Vlan1 is usually assigned to each port as untagged on consumer smart switches.
This should be removed on all access ports with a pvid that is not 1.
vlan1 will remain untagged on all trunk ports.
