x86 CPU + RouterOS

I’m trying to understand CPU performance differences.

  1. More cores is better or one core but more MHz? Example: dual core 1,5GHz or 1 core 3GHz.
  2. Are all multicore CPU’s supported without problems? Maybe there are some CPU’s to avoid?
  3. CPU architecture. Will 3GHz Celeron will perform same (or aprox. same) as 3GHz Xeon?

Avoid hyperthreading CPU’s (or turn off in BIOS) with RouterOS as it causes weird issues.
If you use a 5+ release my experience : The more cores the better the performance whilst older ones releases seemed to favor higher clock speeds.
Xeon will smash a Celeron from what I recall in my tests.

Do not buy cheap garbage machines with crappy realtek nics.
YOU GONNA HAVE A BAD TIME

Stay with enterprise hardware as it tends to be a more stable and long term platform.

Yep, you’re on the safe side usually when relying on Intel or Broadcom network chips as you find on server grade boards, Dell machines, etc.
