x86 suggested hardware

Greetings,

I am evaluating some different router options. My campus will upgrading from a 90Mb connection to a 1Gb connection in a few months and I am currently running some older hardware that needs to be replaced.

My site currently has the following types of traffic:

  1. I have up to 1000ish employee, faculty, lab, and personal PCs plus a few hundred wireless devices… all connected to the network on private IPs that will be NAT’ed
  2. a few statically NAT’ed IPs for servers
  3. a site-to-site VPN to a satellite campus
  4. 20ish firewall rules

i have several vlans, however all traffic between vlans is routed by my core switching gear, and not my edge router. mostly my router does NAT for internet traffic, VPN to another router, and some firewall rules.

I would like whatever solution i choose to be able to hand the 1Gb of traffic, given the above stated traffic. What kind of x86 hardware would I need for routeros?

I know this is a simplified version of a complex question, but Im just looking for a rough estimate… dual processors? 4gb ram? what types of NICs? etc?

Thanks!

Hi
if you want use x86 architecture you can i think if you use dual core processor (1GHz minimum) and 1GBps NIC and 2GB of ram theirs can handle your needs…

if you want to use routerboard you can use RB1100AHx2.

Good Luck

My dual core x86 2gb ram 10/100 ethernet seems to have max.'d at 25 mbps. Ordered a rb1100ahx2 but folks say that it peaks at 60/70 mbps.

Ultimate req. will be a i7 or xeon quad core with 8 gb ram and pci express with 4/8 ports for nething like 1 gbps bandwidth

my x86 was doing 630mbits and cpu picked at 63%…
p4 3ghz … 2g ram 1 intel gbit ethernet from wan side and a realtek 1gb network side…
want side was with a vlan from isp … only problem was some rx drops …
ros 6.11…
