XR9 range

I’m trying to use 2 of these cards with mikrotik boards, but the range is just terrible. I’m getting about half the range of the XR2. The throughput starts off fine at very close range (~15 feet) but it dies off very fast. Goes down to about 200kbit/s in about less than 50 feet. I tried all the recommended frequencies and a little more but no luck. My spectrum analyzer is not showing anything on the frequencies used. I know it’s not line of sight, but I really thought the 900 should do better in NLOS than the 2.4. On the picture you see how far each gets. The red square is the starting point. Both antennas are 5dbi rubber duckies. One end at 4 feet high, at at 6 which makes the XR2 even more impressive. The 900mhz antennas are 3dbi. At the end point in the picture, with 2 fences a concrete building and some trees and bushes, I’m still getting 8mbps…

Anyone has any thoughts on setting up the XR9 with mikrotik 411AH?

Try enabling nstreme on both ends for the .9ghz link

interface>wireless>nstreme set 0? enabled=yes framer-policy=best-fit framer-limit=2100

Thanx I’ll try that.

Forgot to ask, what are your rssi (signal) levels on both ends when testing at the points described?

Also, I assume both units are routerboards?

you can also enable nstreme in winbox, just look at the tabs to the top under the wireless interface

Yes both boards are 411 ah. When i start the signal is -18. Btw both boards are set as wds ap.

Are you sure the antennas are designed for 900MHz?

Do you have a model number or data sheet on them?

What is the RSSI when they start getting bad?

Tom

Yes they are 900mhz antennas. I pulled them from another perfectly working 900mhz setup from a different manufacturer. I’m not sure about the RSSI when going sour, but I’ll check.

-18 … are you sure? -18 is really “hot”. (I.e. wayyy to much signal, causing ber errors)

Turn down the power a bit if the above is true.

Thanx for all the replies. I’ll post some screenshots tomorrow of my settings and rssi while using it.

-18dBm could quickly create dead radios. Are you using the correct translated frequencies with the correct bandwidths allowed? I have seen this behaviour when testing inside, with both radios in the same room. No throughput, ridiculously loud signals. Turn’em down, way down! Or remove antennas altogether. I have XR9s going through much obstruction with no problem in any regard.

Well I did some more testing finally. Throughput starts fine at -25 dbi and it goes down to 170kbit/s at -75-80.

I’ll keep playing with it. I have it on 2ghz 5mhz right now. I turned it down to 20dbi power

a reminder: this is a mikrotik product forum.
