Feature request: HSGMII for SFP >1Gbps synchronization.

Wed Sep 09, 2020 1:39 pm

I submit to the sagacity of the hardware and software developers of v7 firmware the opportunity to manage the HSGMII extensions allowing the synchronization of certain SFP interfaces at speeds> 1Gbps.

For example 2.5Gbps on SFP, for a lot of references, like in https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r32458588

It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your great stuff.

I agree.

I really need this feature too, and I'm stuck with my SFP on the Mikrotik CCR2004

Yes please :
It will make mikrotik routers/switchs a very valuable good alternative to ISP all-in-one boxes in France.
HSGMII extensions for gpon modules at 2,5 Gbps would allow us to use our fiber offer at its full potential : 2Gbps down / 600Mbps up
Some concurrent hardware already support it but I personally prefer your brand.

Any news ? Is it possible for a futur v7 version, at least for hardware with 10gb ports ?

Thx.

It's not a hardware limitation on current line of devices (CCR2*** routers, CRS*** switches) as both can support HSGMII according to cpu datasheets.

This would make these devices the easiest replacement for European ISP routers.

Big +1 for this. especially with new ROS v7!

Today, on a CCR2004-1G-12S+-2XS on RouterOs v7.3beta33, it is possible to sync Lantiq chipset ONU SFP at 2.5Gbps in CLI mode doing:
/interface/ethernet
set auto-negotiation=no etherNumber
set speed=2.5Gbps etherNumber
Then disable dhcp client, disable interface, enable it again, wait for some trafic, enable dhcp client.

Many thanks Mikrotik Devs for this killing feature highly needed in France.

Thanks Mikrotik !

Too bad I got a CCR2004 16G 2S+, the 2 SFP+ beeing wired direct on the CPU...

I'll try it with the CRS305 :)

I don't get why they can't add the support by the cpu. The switch asic is more "compatible" than the one into the cpu ? idk....

Comes down to the Linux driver support. Most don't have 2500Base-X support, even though the chip may support it. So either Mikrotik goes ahead and implements that part themselves or waits for the Kernel to gain this support from the OEM. On Switch chips it may be easier as the switch chip can handle it directly while being connected to the CPU through a different, supported link mode.

I can confirm it's working on CRS309-1G-8S+ and CRS328-24P-4S+
Tried that with a Huawei MA5671A GPON-ONU.

Seems to sync OK at 2.5Gbps on a CRS317. (GPON ONU from FS.com)
However since switch rules are broken and bridge filters are ignored, I can't make it work.

Does any 2.5Gb/s Ethernet interface support HSGMII or vice versa or both ?
In other words, beside 2.5Gb/s speed, what does an Ethernet interface need to support to fully implement HSGMII ?

Nope, it has to be 2.5g+HSGMII compatible. A lot of 2.5g interfaces are not HSGMII compatible.

Are you seeing the 2.5Gbps speed option on the SFP+ port when you disable auto negotiation?

I upgraded the CRS309 to 7.3beta37, and 2.5Gbps option isn't available.

As it says in the changelog, it is only available from the CLI at the moment, not Winbox.

@Florian:
Thanks for replying !
In many instances, I've HSGMII and 2.5Gb/s being used as if they meant exactly the same !

Any news on HSGMII support on device without switch chip, like some tilera CCR ?
