Adding 3rd party packages

Thu Jun 24, 2021 2:22 am

I just checked out OpenWRT's gigantic list of optional packages and it's scary how many there are and how many extra features you can get. Meanwhile, with Mikrotik, you only get what comes with RouterOS. Would it be possible to add the ability to install 3rd party packages in ROS v7?

Looking at how MikroTik has behaved so far:

No.

I would really like to see SwOS as an available package for ROS.

Where all Ethernet switch functions are handled by a SwOS package in ROS.
Where you can Winbox/mac-winbox ( or telnet, mac-telnet, ssh or HTTP ) to ROS , then navigate to SwOS.
And , have the default un-configured SwOS switch all ports until otherwise configured or changed by the admin.
And ... also have ROS safe-mode work with the SwOS package.

This would give you the best of both worlds.

Is like you want Windows 10 but for do that you install one virtual machine on (unused) Ubuntu just-for-this, instead to install it directly.

You can install OpenWRT on some MikroTik routers.
