Sure, Linus Towards release Kernel 5 before ROS 7 has left Beta.....
SO it is Outdated before it is stable......

Do you know anything about the "soon"?

I say it to know if to continue investing money in mikrotik or move to another brand ..

Well Christmas has come and gone for another year, my money is still on MUM Europe.

Even if it was realised then I would not put it into product for another 6 months until we've tested it heavily as the key features we're looking to have improved are BGP Performance, True Isolated VRF's and ipv6.

That could be a good idea to pass to the dev team : having a unicorn on a cloud as boot logo for Beta v7 on LCD equiped routers!

And hopefully some new ARM64-based hardware as CCR replacement.
Indeed. The CCR-line is a key product for many customers. It would be very welcomed with an refreshed version with similar number/type of interfaces.
There is no need to replace the hardware if MT upgrade to the latest Linux kernel which supports Tile arch. 4.14.x IIRC. It has a lot of new networking feature, like SRv6. It would be nice if ROS v7 moved to that kernel version...

What is the timeline?
if there is no cut-off date then it's just proof of concept for developers.
Alpha is exactly that - proof of concept (in a lot of ways)

They continue to work on 6.x, but 7 being a new kernel and everything means they have to make sure all existing functionality from 6.x is implemented and working properly with the major kernel changes (along with taking advantages of possible new efficient interfaces in the new kernels) so once they believe they've got a good working prototype, it'll move to Beta for public to help test.

Unfortunately, if we wanted to force their hand on v7 timeline/release schedule, they'd all but have to stop development on 6.x and that doesnt necessarily mean v7 will be quick, could you deal with 6 months+ of no further 6.x updates?

Software release cycles at the level of RouterOS are very time consuming things to get right. I'd rather have a good v7 then a rushed one.
There is no need to stop v6 development. It can continue as bugfix and relocate more development capacity to the future ROS versions if they wont want to stucked in v6 and v7alpha/insiderbeta.
The networking world growing dynamically and it won't wait to anybody who stops especially for years.
In my opinion the 3.x linux kernel is too old to satisfy the networking engineers needs in 2019...

Waiting for ROS v7 x64 too long...

Version v6 released in 2013. After 6 years still no ROS v7 x64 ...
>>> What's new in 6.0 (2013-May-17 14:04)

ROS v6 is based on too old kernel v3 which cannot satisfy 10% of networking needs in 2019 ...

ROS v7 should go directly for kernel v5 ... must have features must be:

1. x64 base version
2. BGP multi thread
3. Support for all new INTEL nics 10G, 40G, 100G

Such ROS v7 can have much higher price.

Don't hope any BGP Multithreading, because it is useless (bgp is slow because of Tilera cores, and multithreading route injection in FIB is a mess), i just hope for better routing filters, i have sooooo many problems with the current implementation...

We are currently evaluating alternative hardware for our BGP core as the Mikrotik OE hardware cannot support modem carrier requirements. Even with a CCR1072 we cannot run simple MPLS configuration without packet loss on route table updates.

Any recommendations on hardware would be appreciated - must have 4+ SPF+ ports. Something along the lines of http://www.lannerinc.com/products/netwo ... s/nca-4020

@krisjanisj: nice! I think you guys really missed the opportunity to stage the release of v7beta1 on 1st April.
You could even create fake NPK, fill it with some rubbish random content (to make reasonable size) and it wouldn't do anything except writing "april fools" in the CLI after the restart... (since its beta, nobody would be really hurt)

@vecernik87 I laughed about an idea to just re-brand latest v6 stable release as v7 and release it (with it showing up for example as v6.44.1(April Fools) as version while executing "/system resource print" command) last week with @reiniss2, but rather not provoke people and play with such things as this could go south really fast. When its gonna be ready - its gonna be released in proper beta format.

P.S wanted to change link to an image of this but rather not.

@normis

Any timeline you can announce for v7 I know there was meant to be an announcement at the recent MUM but unfortunately there was not.

I'm in the same boat as many others with bgp performance issues and really need a timeline that I can give to the CEO before I have to start looking at other vendors after using mikrotik for 15 years :(

Given the lack of clarity that the community has have for the last 10 years, don't expect anything in the short/mid term. Just do what you have to do to make your business running properly. ISV's and HW ODM/OEM's come and go. It's important that companies invest in products that have a clear line of direction, otherwise be ready to be nimble and adapt to whatever the market has that fulfill your needs.

All I can say is that development of v7 has picked up in the last few months, more than ever. While I can't promise anything stable, it is pretty safe to say, that some kind of public test release (like beta for specific platforms) could be expected this year. The chances of that happening are now higher than ever before, when similar promises were made.

Excellent news. I'm really enjoying the switching and VLAN use of RouterOS. Looking forward to Layer 2 security features.

Can say that comparing last few years the frequency of ROS v7 internal development builds in last few months, as noted by @normis, has increased by a lot (can't tell the precise numbers because I don't want to dive that deep into math).
So there's still hope that the unicorn status v7 has will be changed to something not as mythical.

Nice to see at least some reply regarding v7.

Just want to say when it's ready enough to release some alpha version, please do so. Even if it's missing some features or doesn't work on some hardware, it would still be great to get some real world testing results. I can imagine wireless and various embedded platforms may take a lot of work, so maybe as a first peek, CHR based on v7 might be the easiest way? That would allow us to test and discover any bugs and benchmark the routing and kernel network routines, on common virtualized hardware, taking custom hardware mostly out of the equation...

In all Honesty I think we need more than that to make us wait another year. Would it be too much to ask for a Video showing what the direction of ROS v7 so we can see what to expect as many of us are needing to change vendors sooner rather than later if we cannot improve certain features like BGP/MPLS/VRF @normis

lol Yes I was sent that this morning when only 5 people had viewed it.

Next Video Request, CPU load and MPLS VRF performance when route convergence occurs please. We cannot rung more than 1 MPLS VRF across our core of CCR1072 because of major packet loss inside the vrf every time the routing table converges.

Normus just said above that a beta will be available this year. I wouldn't expect the first release to be 100% complete. I would be happy to just test it out on my test network and non critical systems. :) File those bug reports and get it stable.

I suspect there is no too big jump if the leaked video is real and the allocated flash space is almost the same as on ROS6.
If you compare a compiled size of Linux kernel v3 and v4 with comparable configuration, v4 is significantly bigger.
And again if the leaked video is real the CLI is changed too and its more like API syntax ;)

I really hope they use v4 kernel, but MIkrotik is still selling devices with 16MB of flash (WHYYYYYYY you do this?!!!!)... so it's not looking good.

OK, please forgive my ignorance, but what are the main advantages for v7 over v6 that are expected to reach the final builds?

That's a serious question, not a troll attempt.

To my knowledge, mostly people crave for better support of multithreaded routing (which was promised long time ago) and drivers (notice references to v7)
But generally, people are hyped more than players of Diablo before release of new version. Many of them expect every trouble will be magically fixed.

Unlike Blizzard we tend to keep our RouterOS working on same platforms as ROSv6 does (and release mobile app for ease of configuration not migrate the whole darn thing to a cheap mobile game ripoff since "Who doesn't have phones nowadays...").

Well, I was actually referring to time before Diablo 2 .. I guess its too old for people to remember today...
True, but isn't it way more funnier if the joke is relevant?

I must admit that you pointed out much more relevant interpretation. I am just afraid, if it ends up that way (e.g. dropping support to mipsbe/tile etc...) Therefore I am not sure if its funnier or scarier.

Nah, please public a roadmap with public informations in a correct way. Under correct I mean correct for MTik and correct for customers too.
If I working on something my boss insist plans :) Please tell us MTik plans about RouterOS development.

Community driven features and minimal public roadmap is not something Mikrotik knows how to handle properly.

Since I recognize that roadmap/feature plans are difficult for the majority to "read" properly (i.e. understand that they might be (de)prioritized), at least the community driven feature requests comms could/should be improved...

Just look into how other companies are doing it:

https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Fea ... ost-kudoed
https://feedback.azure.com/forums/16940 ... -directory
https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/glo ... voice.html

I've seen numerous FR (highly voted) being made for over 5+ years with almost no follow-up or no reply at all.

As for roadmaps, there's still safe ways to share with limited impact. Example: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microso ... p?filters=

I think the hype for Diablo3 was grater than Diablo2. Don't get me wrong: I have all 3 (should have learned with D2, and never bought D3, but I digress), and hated what they did with D2.

I miss my Tank Mage, in D1. I could get hand in hand with Diablo itself - on hell difficulty - and win. No, I didn't use cheats. A lot of potions, though. :D

@anthonws: MikroTik already has that... kind of. Description of this forum is "BETA Testing and Feature Suggestions for the next RouterOS release (ROS v7)", so you're welcome to post your ideas and people do so. Others comment on it to show their interest. Only the actual voting is missing. Oh and also MikroTik's interest, it seems. If there was voting, by now we'd have OpenVPN (*) on top with 10k votes and it would be sitting and waiting as it is now. So that's pointless.

(*) Actually, OpenVPN it not that important by itself. It's not THE killer feature and after such long time, anyone who needed it probably already found different ways how to satisfy their needs. It's more like a symbol now, even though it would still be nice to have.

Personally I'm a little bit skeptical about these "user voice" things. You have product used by millions and then decide what to implement based on hundereds or low thousands of votes. And you don't even know how many are from people who just came by and won't care a month after. Even from user perspective, nobody is going to browse through thousands of ideas to find good ones. You'll post yours, give few additional votes to some popular requests at the top that you also like and it will be most likely it. So how much these things can be trusted, that's a question.

I really hope they use v4 kernel, but MIkrotik is still selling devices with 16MB of flash (WHYYYYYYY you do this?!!!!)... so it's not looking good.
The kernel version doesn't define its size... the recent kernels are big when precompiled becasue they do have more and more hardware and features integrated ; for such high perf/low latency application you go with custom build conf with only dependencies you need. There's no use having video, dvb, audio, tape drive, etc.

What's available today is not close to any proper customer engagement. Like you stated, I can go there, ask for a feature, and have millions of people go "+1" without changing anything. Not even a mere reflection of a decision from Mikrotik. Even if it's "Will not be implemented".

I work in a company where everything related to User engagement is vital for the development of our products. We actively scout and research what and where to invest next based on multiple indicators, including platforms like UserVoice! It's thanks to them that our customers (the broader market) feels closer to the decisions being made and also that they are heard. Without the need to be a S400 and have strategic (direct) relation ships with our product teams.

If OpenVPN will never be implemented, then someone should officially state it and make sure that information sits in a place where's visible and related to the FR.

My 2 cents,
anthonws.

They probably have other methods, feedback from distributors, people contacting support, MUM participants, ... so they probably know well what customers want. Being more open about their plans, and generally making customers feel closer to developement and heard, that's surely something they could improve.

Not neglecting those methods of customer feedback and closer engagement.
But like you just mentioned, I also agree that Mikrotik could be a bit more transparent and/or engaged with the community on the future of the OS.
The more I think about it, the more I agree that ROS should support a plugin framework or alike.

OK, please forgive my ignorance, but what are the main advantages for v7 over v6 that are expected to reach the final builds?

That's a serious question, not a troll attempt.
Personally, I'm hoping for proper IKEv2/IPSEC or OpenVPN support so that I can connect to NordVPN.

Probably asking for EAP authentication as initiator, which is not possible for IKEv2 atm.

Two things:
  1. Who said there will be news in July?
    1. July is synonym for summer for many people.
    2. for quite a few people, Christmas happens in the middle of summer (southern hemisphere)
  2. I wouldn't mind some positive news about ROS v7, no matter what date

I configured IPSec on one of my RoS devs, and that said don't configure base mode because it will removed in RoSv7 so something is cooking in the owen and i hope it wont burned up :)
