IP/Routing menu organization

Sun Jul 04, 2021 2:45 am

[Edit]
RouterOS v7.1beta6
[/Edit]

Pretty sure that this has been around for older version as well, but...

  • Routes an be found at /routing/route (read-only) and /ip/route via the CLI. Why not consolidate the two?
  • Routing rules can be found at IP>Routes>Rules in WebFig, but only via /routing/rule via CLI. Why in two different places?

Result of patchwork over time or is there a logical explanation for why things are laid out this way?

What version of RouterOS you have?
v7 since I posted in this forum, but specifically v7.1beta6.

What CLI you talk about?
https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Console. I'm connecting plain via SSH.

On WinBox / MAC Telnet / WinBox Termial
Direct
/routing/rule
do not exist
It does exist on my router: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/pages/vi ... d=59965513. In fact, /ip route rule does not exist on my v7.1beta6 installation.

just for find some valid complain, why on menu have the "s" (for the plural) at the end and on CLI not.
Good point. That and the fact that items should ideally have the same menu tree on the GUI and on the console.

I see "Active Topics" and I do not read this is about BETA

Please be more precise next time.

Yes, is my fault because i do notice is on "RouterOS v7 BETA" section.

But you everitime must be clear on what version you use (not only generic "beta"), and on what device.

Thanks.

For you curiosity, 7 still beta until the routing section are unified and corrected...

Fair point and good that you asked - precise version declarations are always good.

As a follow-up, here are two pages from the new docs (not fully migrated yet) which explain why routes can be found in two places at the moment:

https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... g+Examples
v7 introduces a new menu /routing route, which shows all address family routes as well as all filtered routes with all possible route attributes. /ip route and /ipv6 route menus are used to add static routes and for simplicity shows only basic route attributes.

https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... Are+Routed
In RouterOS you have three menus to see current state of routes in routing table:
/ip route - list IPv4 routes and basic properties
/ipv6 route - list IPv6 routes and basic properties
/routing route - list all routes with extended properties
/routing route menu currently is read only.
