Severe IPv6 GRE forwarding performance issues since RouterOS 7.1beta6

Tue Aug 31, 2021 1:01 pm

Hi,

we are running a BGP border router using a CCR1036 with RouterOS 7.1 since beta1.

Since beta6, we are having severe performance issues with forwarding ip6gre packets. As beta3-5 have been unusable due to several significant BGP/filtering issues, therefore we don't know if these versions are affected.

While we are able to get >800 mbit/s TCP through a gre6 tunnel with RouterOS 7.1beta2, only about 15 mbit/s can be achieved with RouterOS 7.1rc1.
It does not seem to affect UDP traffic inside the GRE tunnel.

The GRE tunnel is not(!) established on a RouterOS devices. RouterOS only forwards the ip6gre packets between the tunnel endpoints.

When speed testing directly from endpoint to endpoint (IPv6) without encapsulating traffic inside a ip6gre tunnel, the speed is as expected (~800-900 mbit/s).

The router is processing ~6-7 gbit/s constantly. Without this background noise, the issue is a bit harder to observe.

Hello.

I've encountered similar issue while trying to setup IPIPv6 tunnel.
I think it is a bug...
However, I found a trick to avoiding it in my case.

I added WAN(for IPv6) port to newly created bridge.
Then assigned IPv6 address which is for local endpoint of tunnel to this bridge.
