7.1RC2 expired password can be ignored

Thu Sep 02, 2021 10:37 pm

In ROS v7.1RC2 if my user's password is marked as expired I can simply click cancel or ctrl-c on cli and continue my login session. I think that changing an expired password should be required before the user is allowed to make changes to the router.

Has anyone else experienced this? Thinking about submitting to Mikrotik support as a bug.

Yes, you can cancel, but it will keep nagging you on every new login until you will finally give up and change the password.

The dialog should not be skipable. IMHO.

Do you know these Shareware-dialogs from the early 2000s? Winrar for example. People clicked away the nagscreen even for years. They never bought a license to get rid of the dialog.

So no - people dont give up.

In the case of ROS password, it does not cost you any money to get rid of nagging popups :)

But it "costs" the user to set a password.

"Better not set it now - I MAYBE forget it and then I am locked out and have to netinstall." *user has flashbacks about last netinstall and clicks CANCEL*

How about Netinstall and a password. I did not see that in the Wiki being mentioned.

Do I read this correct. If a password is set then you can't Netinstall?

Passwords do not matter to netinstall. It will format any device and reinstall ROS.

What they mean is that the only way to recover from forgetting your password is to netinstall. If you don’t know the correct password then you must netinstall to regain access to the device.

so, can we get an option? maybe it nags by default but you have an option for strict enforcement of password expiration?

is there any place to set the expiration parameters? how many days a password is valid? we have hundreds of these things in the field and would rathger not just have random password expiry's all over the place.. we dont even leave them open to the internet. fortunately only our test labs have the 7.x software for now , but we'd like to set the number of days in line with our other equipment password schedules..
