v7.1rc5/6 OVA file won't boot on Virtualbox.

Tue Nov 16, 2021 5:52 pm

After importing an OVA into Virtualbox (Version 6.1.26 r145957 (Qt5.6.2)) the VM will not boot.
This happens for both the v7.1rc5 and 7.1rc6 OVA files downloaded directly from Mikrotik.
The result is a black screen showing the message "Error loading Operating System"

The VBox log shows the following (in part):
00:00:07.527514 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from Hard Disk...
00:00:07.528786 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: int13_harddisk: function 02, disk 80, parameters out of range 0000/0000/0023!
00:00:07.529822 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: int13_harddisk: function 02, disk 80, parameters out of range 0000/0000/0023!
00:00:07.530771 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: int13_harddisk: function 02, disk 80, parameters out of range 0000/0000/0023!
00:00:07.531688 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: int13_harddisk: function 02, disk 80, parameters out of range 0000/0000/0023!
00:00:07.532581 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: int13_harddisk: function 02, disk 80, parameters out of range 0000/0000/0023!
There is little information on this on the web, other than that similar errors were seen with early Windows VMs where they were converted from VMware disk images and this caused issues, there was some mention of the disk geometry on the virtual disks being incorrect.

Has anyone else seen this, and is there a way round it?

Re: v7.1rc5/6 OVA file won't boot on Virtualbox.  [SOLVED]

Never used the OVA Template, but the problem is pretty visible when you import it:
MikroTik OVA VirtualBox - err.PNG
And easy fix, you drag the image to the IDE controller.
MikroTik OVA VirtualBox.PNG
Problem solved.
As stated in the wiki:
https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:C ... stallation
SCSI controller Hyper-V and ESX is usable just for secondary disks, system image must be used with IDE controller!
Though this only mentions Hyper-V and ESX ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And 6.49 boots off SCSI just fine, 7.1rc1 and rc4 don't. I guess no v7 does?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Thanks for that, I hadn't twigged this as being a limitation as I'd not hit it on v6.

I appreciate your quick response.
