MikroTik userman doesn't load unless restarted

Thu Dec 03, 2015 6:26 am

Hi

We're running a small hotspot system on an RB750.

If we'd like to add or print some vouchers we enter the user-manager using the web interface

<ipaddress>/userman

which prompts for password, then when you enter the user/pass it loads up with |||||| lines

If the routerboard has been running for around 10 to 20 minutes then it will never load past the |||||| s

If we reboot the routerboard (which kills the internet, so it's not popular) then it will load past the ||||||

It's not a great workaround and we'd like to be able to access userman without rebooting?

Any ideas?

Which RouterOs and firmware versions? Have you enabled logging? is there anything relevant in the logs?

RouterOS is 6.27, and packages are 6.27
current-firmware: 3.02

Logging... not sure what is relevant in this case, there are the usual messages when we reboot it such as:
dec/06/2015 09:07:49 system, error, critical router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog timer
dec/06/2015 18:32:14 system, error, critical router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog timer
dec/06/2015 20:33:22 system, error, critical router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog timer
dec/07/2015 16:11:11 system, error, critical router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog timer
dec/07/2015 16:25:46 system, error, critical login failure for user staff from 192.168.2.102 via web
dec/07/2015 16:27:40 system, error, critical router was rebooted without proper shutdown
dec/08/2015 08:07:59 system, error, critical router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog timer
Not sure how to "enable logging" but the logging area of system looks like this:

Either enable logging for manager through winbox GUI or open a New Terminal and issue
/system logging
add prefix=USERMANAGER topics=manager
then watch the logs, most probably your database is corrupted, that device looks to have problems as pointed by the watchdog rebooting it.

OK so I turned on that logging as you suggested... didn't know how that worked, cheers for that.

When I open the /userman webpage:
userman webpage.png
At the same time as loading that page, nothing additional appears in the log, however the usual requests from the hotspot seem to trickle in as normal every so often... so I'm assuming that part works ok... it's just getting into the userman web page that doesn't.
Sample log: (from that exact time of opening that webpage - but no entries appear when logging in)

Remove the logging rule I posted then re-add it with debug info omitted:
/system logging
add prefix=USERMANAGER topics=manager,!debug
Then look for any suspicious logs in user-manager.

Run this also and post back:
/tool user-manager user print count-only
Also look at Tool > Profile and watch out for usermanager and flash processes, or anyone with high CPU usage, specially when user-manager seems to "lock".

Hi there,

I just logged into the site today to run the things you said and check it out.

While I was loading Winbox i suspected something was up as it was performing poorly.

The CPU usage was at 100%

I added the logging type you suggested manager excluding debug...

also I noticed a lot of hotspot warnings with RADIUS timeouts...

So I went to Tools Profile to check that - and bam! Winbox shut and I believe the router rebooted.

So after it's rebooted now I get to check it out.
Sadly it's not as telling now since all those log entries are gone.

/tool user-manager user print count-only:
[admin@MikroTik] /tool user-manager user> print count-only
728
So I'm not sure how "Profile" is supposed to work - it doesn't show anything, just a blank window.
I launched the web site at /userman and it doesn't show anything in the profile window.
I looked up the documentation and it appears it's supposed to show something similar to top on linux.

The log has a bit of timeout stuff -- nothing sticks out to me tho

Yes, the profile tool is like top. Most probably is not showing up because the router CPU is completely bogged down due to load.

It could be your (user manager) database being corrupted the cause your usermanager instance not answering radius queries.

You should do some cleanup of leftover users, the RB750 is a small router the more you ease the load on it the better.

For starters I'd copy a configuration export and the user-manager folder to a safe place.

To create an export:
/export compact file=MyOrigConfig627
That will produce an .rsc file you can drag and drop from Winbox > Files over to your desktop.

Then would try a database rebuild:

Reboot, access the 750 and issue
/tool user-manager database rebuild
/tool user-manager database rebuild-log
Reboot again and try to access userman via http. Then do leftover users cleanup, and repeat the rebuild.

Being a hotspot I guess the users aren't that critical and you could create new ones?

If so, for peace of mind I'd tender that 750:

Create and store safely a configuration export
Upgrade the router to the latest bugfix-only release (6.32.3 as of this time)
Upgrade its firmware
Save a complete export again
Save a userman database backup
Reset configurations to no defaults,
Reload the export done under 6.32.3
Check user-manager imported all the profiles and relevant users, or install it and create new ones.
