Stupid question about "Cloud Routers". What are they?

Fri Nov 20, 2015 3:10 pm

Maybe I didn't found the correct answer in internet, but, what is a "CLOUD ROUTER" from Mikrotik?

Because, for me, I understand a CLOUD service is some software/service/application/infrastructure that is in internet, and not in your building/organization.

The email always had been CLOUD, but new the newbies call it: CLOUD email hahaha

But a router??? The router is physically in your NETWORK.

Imagine.... a router in the CLOUD, all traffic going/coming to internet BEFORE the router....

Thank you.

Why not? If your servers are on Amazon EC2, you could need a cloud router.
Do you think "cloud" is actually in the sky? All cloud is powered by actual routers and servers. They are physical devices. How do you imagine Amazon connects their devices if not through actual routers :) ?

Of course, but the point being made is that the word "cloud" basically means "off premises", so a device that you have "on premises" is by definition not a "cloud" thing.

If I've gotten MikroTik's messaging correctly, "Cloud Routers" refers to routers intended to be used by providers for cloud services, whereas other routers are intended for smaller, "on premises" networks... Right?

You could say that. They are quite powerful after all. Cloud is a matter of perspective.

Thank you Normis for your answer.

But still I am stupid :)

The router ( cloud router) is in your network.

If my server are in Amazon EC2, what makes the difference in the routers? :)

I dont imagine anything without routers, but it is my question. What is the difference apart the naming between a normal router and a cloud router from MK?

Thank you and have a nice weekend.

i had also the same question-confusion in my mind when i see the word "cloud" in mikrotik routers.
so what is the difference from my rb2011 and the closest (specs and price) cloud core routers ?
"cloud" word just means "powerful" ?
