RB951G + Omnitik + adsl modem router

Thu May 26, 2016 11:20 pm

Greetings guys,
I just bought RB951G-2HnD and Omnitik 5HnD to set up along with an adsl modem router and use the hotspot features for a hotel.
The plan is to pass internet through the modem router to RB951G, setup the hotspot, the voucher system and the bandwidth control on it and then use the Omnitik as a 5Ghz access point on the hotel exterior.
At first i tried using the quick setup as Home AP for the RB951 with port 1 as WAN. I managed to set it up alone and add the hotspot and bandwidth features but as soon as i'd connect omnitik through any of the ports, internet would stop working.
Anyway i've been trying numerous tutorials and reviews over at youtube and on forums continuously for the past two days and i still havent figured out what i'm doing wrong.
I don't have any specific needs for the IPs. The dsl router's IP is 192.168.1.254 and it runs a DHCP server which i don't need to keep.
Ideally i would like to put the mikrotiks in the same subnet like 192.168.1.253 for the RB951G and 192.168.1.252 for Omnitik.
How is this possible?
Both run the latest OS.
Any info would be highly appreciated !

Your idea is good. Keep it in the same subnet.

First make sure your PC connected to port 2,3 or 4 on the 951 is working fine, fast etc...

Then change the DHCP range to 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.250.

Disconnect PC, and connect again. See if you receive an address in the new range.

Check internet, speed etc....

Then connect Omnitik, and set it up as WISP AP. Yes, WISP.... not Home AP..... You can setup the address manually, or have DHCP giving it out. For security reasons, you should have it in a complete different IP range, for example: 10.10.0.0/24. Manually enter the DNS of the provider, or use Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Setup SSID, password etc...
Then check connectivity, with laptop over WiFi, and check speed, if all internet pages are working.

Once that is working fine, you can start deploying Hotspot on the RB951!!! On port 3 (or whatever the Omnitik is connected). Yes, Hotspot can also be running on a LAN port. Do NOT deploy the Hotspot on the Omnitik. It should not be it's purpose.

Do not forget to remove the password on the WiFi (open network).

Hello thanks for your answer.
I tried the config you mentioned above but i'm still facing issues.
At first, i start to setup the 951 as a home AP with all the IP you suggested, but at some point i'm changing something and the main config changes to WISP.

At this point:
I've disabled the WAN router DHCP server and have it running as 192.168.1.1 on the 951 DHCP.
I've started a DHCP on 951 with 192.168.1.10-250 range with BRIDGE as interface and manually entered DNS.
Bridge has ports Eth1 (dsl WAN) & wlan.
So far so good as i get internet and dynamic IPs by connecting to the 951 on wifi, pings are fast etc.
This config however shows as WISP AP on quick set.

Now the moment i try to deploy the hotspot on either port, (eth3 is the Omnitik and wlan1) with default pool (10.5.50.1 & 10.5.50-2-254) DNS manually entered dns name set as DNS, im still getting the 192.168 range IP over wifi and hotspot never starts and the hotspot server icon turns red and stays red on every port.
The hotspot should be running on bridge between eth3 and wlan bridge in order to have it on both ends?
The physical setup is, DSL router > eth1 of 951, eth3 of 951 to eth1 of Omnitik.

Any ideas? What am i missing here?

Regarding the Omnitik part, i'd like to clear some things on your suggestions.
Should i start a DHCP server with 10.0.0.10-250 range over there on wlan interface and then bridge eth1 with wlan?

I also exported some config in case you need any more info
Looking forward to your next answer.

What is the purpose of the Omnitik?

Is it to transmit the hotspot to surrounding areas or for private clients to connect without having to go through the hotspot?

It will be used to extend the hotspot access to the hotel exterior. At this point i'm still facing issues with 951 hotspot as i couldn't configure it to work with the wan modem.
If i manage to fix the first part, (wan modem router> 951 & hotspot) then i will try to setup omnitik to transmit the hotspot outside.

You are using the whole RB951G router as a hotspot, all ports bridged with wlan.

Run the hotspot setup on bridge instead of the wlan.

If you can post the RB951G config here, go to terminal /export file = hotspot

Drag file from router to your desktop

Open the file using notepad++ or sublime text editor

Copy all contents and paste here but hide and passwords you want to keep safe

I'm not sure of the config that i have right now because i've tried a lot of variations. With the posted config, i get the login hotspot page as soon as i connect the router on the dsl router port, but i cant get online even after logging in. Also things are pretty slow.
Omnitik is not connected right now.
I've also tried setting up the hotspot with default settings on 10.5.50.0\24

Re: RB951G + Omnitik + adsl modem router

Wed Jun 01, 2016 1:20 am

Greetings, thanks for your help.
I did what you suggested, reset and apply the script in terminal.
I'm still facing connectivity issues.
As soon as i plug the 951 in the dsl router, and it doesn't matter if im connected to the 951 or the dsl router over wifi, the internet stops working. It just loads and loads any page.
I also tried to input the ISP DNS just in case but it doesn't help.
Also i'm not being redicted to the hotspot domain automatically, only if i type it, an even after login nothing changes.
I also tried disabling the DHCP server on the dsl router and enabling a DHCP on top of your config in 951. No success.
Connecting over my phone gives the following page error
13348746_10205897354939069_236741207_n.png
Any more suggestions? :(

Re: RB951G + Omnitik + adsl modem router

Hmm, we are getting closer. Your last script opens hotspot login in a split second and even brings it up upon connection on my smartphone. I can still browse while connected to the dsl router's wifi, but i cant open pages while connected on the 951's wifi and after logged in. The browser seems to try to load the page but it hangs there, loading until i get the connection timed out error..
I also tried with ISPs DNS again, still no luck.

Ok i just enabled NAT & UPnP from Quick set menu and it now works well!
I just have to install userman and create vouchers and set bandwidth controls.
Now how should i set up Omnitik?
WISP with default settings and no DHCP server would work?

Ok glad you sorted it,

The Omnitik is used as an AP so no dhcp is needed :)
you can use the Quickset to config it, Wisp AP
Don't forget to "Set your country"

Bridge > Automatic
Address Source > Any

I'm so very grateful that you pointed out the right config. I had started to lose hope after so many days of trials.
Anyway i'll try to setup omnitik in the way you suggest, but i'll only have access to it on Friday. I'll try completing the hotspot voucher configuration first and i'll post back the results on Friday!
Thanks again for your help :D

Ok that's great, looking forward to hearing your progress, remember to backup all your scripts when you have your network complete using the /export file and save on your comp :)

Just question:
Why you do not run PPPoE client on Mikrotik and your adsl router in bridge mode?
This should be imho easier and more obvious for setup.

Hello Pea,
that was my original though, but since it was more complicated and after the first fails on more basic things, i just left it aside.
Also the dsl router has phone, fax & card onboard which works through SAP and i guess they will stop working if i do any major changes in the way they communicate.

Hello guys,
i completed the setup last Saturday, everything turned out to work just fine.
For the record, omnitik was set to work as WISP with default settings and NAT enabled.
The 951 did the hard work hosting the hotspot, the queue rules for specific download/upload rates worked like a charm.

Thank you all for your help and support :D
