USB LTE modem, buying choice and setup

Wed Jul 13, 2016 2:07 pm

Hi!
I'm about to buy and setup a USB LTE/4G modem with a RB951G-2HnD.

I'm thinking of buying a ZTE MF823 or Huawei E3372/E3372H-153/E8372.
(I'm open to other suggestions of models easily available in Norway/Sweden.)

In the wiki-list, the ZTE is listed as "some settings are ignored", and for the Huawei's it seems "LTE interface only" is the thing.
... I guess this means I should get whichever of these I find/buy to work with LTE/4G in Sweden.(?)

For setting this up, I will be "in the dark"/without internet connection when I'm on-site, so I need to prepare in advance.
I found this wiki page on LTE, but maybe one of you have nice example /export you could share?
I guess I need to setup the interface and add APN, PIN and maybe something else + add a DHCP client to that interface.
Is that about it? :)  #LTE-modem-n00b

The e3372 will need a separate powered usb hub to work on a RB951G-2HnD?

Any examples of a basic setup? (please!) :-D

I just tried the E3372 on a RBmAP2n, using the micro-USB to USB-cable. I was surprised that it seems to work nicely. (I thougth maybe the micro-USB-port wouldn't supply power/enough power, but it powers up, connects and lights up the blue LED ...)

If it does get in trouble power-wise, how will I (most likely) discover it?
So far I've experienced no glitches, apart from the cellular coverage issues related to being located in a rather rural area at the moment ...

The E3372 works on the RB951G-2HnD without problem, I have two of these running.
However, note that it is a very bad implementation of an LTE modem.
It has a built-in NAT router function that you cannot disable, so normally you have 2 layers of NAT between you
and the internet (assuming the mobile provider also runs a CG-NAT).
The subnet used by the NAT router is fixed to 192.168.8.0/24.

I use them because they are readily available, but otherwise they are trash IMHO.
An LTE modem should be able to work as only a MODEM.

About PIN: you can use the management interface of the stick by going  to http://192.168.8.1/
There you can disable the PIN.  You can also put the SIM card in a phone and do it there.

Yes, I noticed the double NAT issue ... Still works well enough for this setup.
