RB750Gr2 Looses Internet Connectivity

Tue Oct 18, 2016 4:32 am

I recently installed a RB750Gr2 in a basic SOHO config and every couple of days hosts on my LAN will loose internet connectivity. When this happens browsers will fail to load pages and I cannot ping public hostnames or ip address's. The RBs interface will load and I have tried going into the console and pinging various sites and dns servers there to no avail. I have tried with my cable modem/router in bridge mode and router mode in router mode I have had the RB wan port on static and DHCP all with the same result. Prior to installing the RB i have run my network using just the isp modem/router, pfsense, and ubiquiti and never had any issues so I dont think the issue is the isp equipment. Any ideas what could cause this or what I should try the next time it happens?

Thanks

Do you have IP on WAN interface when problem occurs? Is DHCP client on WAN interface? Whats the status of default route? Are you NATing traffic twice or MT is getting WAN IP from ISP? ( ISP - WANIP ->ISPModem<-private pool->RB->2nd private pool<-LAN)

Yes I have had a ip on wan interface, it has happened with wan set to static and dhcp when modem was in router model (RB wan port > Modem/Router Lan port) and it has also happened with the modem/router set to bridge mode at which time the WAN port of RB gets a dynamic public address. RE:

Im not certain what you mean, What should I test when this happens? should I check the routing table

Yes, route should be checked via IP-ROUTES. Status of 0.0.0.0/0.

I haven't understood first part. Is your modem in routed or bridge mode?

Good idea thanks, I will check when the issue occurs. Currently modem is in bridge mode but I have experience this issue in both modes

Hi,

OK, lets start with basic troubleshooting. In moments when connection is down can you ping your WAN GW? ( 69.243.104.1 ) or post output of
ip route nexthop pri
Also, how's DHCP configured on LAN side? Can you manually set IP on one PC just for testing purposes? Does masquerade rule getting hits when you do not have connection and trying to open some website?

[admin@MikroTik] > ip route nexthop pri
 0 address=69.243.104.1 gw-state=reachable forwarding-nexthop=""
   interface="" scope=10 check-gateway=none
Also would not respond to pings when it went down

All hosts are dynamic, some have static leases. I will try it one on static the next time it happens but if Im experiencing the issue when logged into the RB750 wouldent the firewall rules or DHCP not apply?

thanks

If i got correctly, you can not ping WAN GW? That's issue with
A: connection to ISP or
B: with config of WAN interface

So, can you post relevant config ( just wan side) ?

Your assumption is right. Its not FW issue, its WAN side related. It's our goal to find out why there are outages on WAN side.

I dident have the issue prior to getting my routerboard when my whole network was running off of the ISP router, so it seems like its the routerboard. Possibly its an issue with the isp I could switch back to there router for a week and see if I have the same problem
So, can you post relevant config ( just wan side) ?
See attached screenshot and let me know if there is anything else in the config you would like to see

This looks ok so far. Next time when outage occurs, try to disable enable DHCP client or renew IP.
ip dhcp-client renew

Looks like issue with DHCP lease.

You can also try with script like
:if ( [/ping 8.8.8.8 interface=wan count=5 ] = 0 ) do={/ip dhcp-client renew wan}
Set it in scheduler to execute every 5-10 mins.
