PCC Load balance with remote gateway check

Tue Aug 07, 2018 7:25 am

Hello all,
New Mikrotik user here. I have implemented a loadbalancing router using 4 GPRS cellular modems and the instructions here : https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:PCC

The load balancing is working well, but the failover is not so smooth. The GPRS modems have limited data quota packages - once the limit is reached, the gateway remains accessible by ping, but the Internet is no longer available. For this reason, the simple check-gateway with ping method is not suitable, and the route must be manually removed.

I would like to implement a remote gateway check, as demonstrated in these instructions : https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Advanced ... _Scripting

My question is: Is it possible to implement this advanced method, but have all 4 recursive gateway checks ping the same remote host? All the examples I have seen show each remote check going to a different remote host. My reason for choosing one remote host is that I believe send a check to 8.8.8.8 will be more robust than choosing 4 alternative hosts. The router is in a remote location, and IP's are regularly blocked by the ISP's. If an IP changes or is blocked, it could take some time for an engineer to update the routes. Google's DNS is available and reliable.

Perhaps there is more simple option? All that is required is that the route is disabled when the remote host is no longer available.
Many thanks,
Marty
