Trying to get past "sfp-type: (unknown)"

Sun Aug 19, 2018 6:42 am

I'm currently trying to connect an RB2011UAS to a Cisco C3560G-24TS using a Cable Matters 10GBASE-CU 2m cable, but having difficulty. I have set "no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid" and "service unsupported-transceiver" on the Cisco, such that it is now showing the gi0/28 interface as "notconnect" rather than "err-disabled". Nonetheless, I can't get this link up. Including some basic outputs from both systems in the hopes that someone here can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

Cisco outputs are prefixed with #:

Don't know if it is noteworthy, but the green indicator light comes when the cable is plugged in to the MT, but not when plugged into the Cisco. Mostly that just seems to reflect the status I've been seeing in the software.

Other things I have now tried to no avail:

Disabled auto-negotiation on the MT. Can't find a way to do the same on a Cisco SFP port, though.

Upgraded the MT to 6.43rc56.

Tried a different (identical) cable.

My first guess is that the SFP is not really compatible with one or both of the devices that they are plugged into. I have found with several equipment brands (MikroTik and others as well) that not all SFPs will work. In fact just this morning I found that none of my assorted pile of 1GigE SFPs would work in a newly installed CSS326-24G-2S. I just ordered a couple MikroTik S-RJ01 SPFs from Amazon.

Frustrating, but definitely good to know. Does anyone have suggestions for a good twinax cable for this situation in that case?

Because it's the Cisco that is showing no link, I am guessing that it is the end that does not like the really cheap SFP. Just a guess however.

Yeah, Cisco tends to be annoyingly twitchy about them. On the plus side, I have a matching C3560G arriving tomorrow, so at that point I should have a few more troubleshooting options.

I had the same issue with some HP 2610-48s. Had to use HP SFPs.

It seems the issue was that Cisco never added that cable to be accepted by a C3560G, only a C3560E. In fact, Cisco never added compatibility for any twinax cable to the C3560G IOS images.

So instead, I went with some GLC-T knock-offs, which worked like a champ.
