Firewall Blocking Email IMAP/POP3?

Tue Oct 02, 2018 3:30 am

I'm trying to use a 3rd party email program to download mail via IMAP. I receive an "Authentication Error" and one of the suggestions I was given from the email support forum was to "disable your firewall." I don't want to do this, however is it necessary to change any of the Firewall Rules to allow IMAP Port 993 Incoming and Port 465 Outgoing?

Thanks,
Don

Unless you set up some paranoid firewall yourself, default one does not block any outgoing connections. Also, if it says "authentication error", it means that connection was already successful and it's just what it says, authentication error (wrong password for example). Or the email program has really badly written error messages, but I don't thing that's it.

Thanks for the fast reply, Sob. I have tried two different email programs and both of them failed. I contacted AOL and they say the problem is with the 3rd party email program based on the screenshot that I sent them with the correct settings.

IMAP is standard protocol, 3rd party email program being the problem is highly unlikely. And two at the same time, no. Is there any supposedly right or official program you can try?

They discontinued their free desktop program. So now, you have to use a web browser unless you want to pay. The web browser access works fine.

Is it perhaps possible that if you don't pay, IMAP access is not enabled for your account? But if you asked them, I guess they would have told you if that was the case.

I found a solution (no thanks to AOL). There is a security setting that you can change to to allow 3rd party applications to access their server.
