RB4011iGS: No 'Microtik' wireless network to connect to for configuration?

Hi,

I have put this to support@microtik.com, the automated reply said I should try the forum first so...

I purchased a RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN. The instruction pamphlet under 'setup' says: From your PC or smartphone, connect to the wireless network name which starts with "MicroTik"
However, after power on of router that 'MicroTik' wireless network is not found by either my phone, a galaxy note 8, nor by my laptop.
I tried the reset as per this instruction: 'Hold this button during boot time until LED light starts flashing, release the button to reset RouterOS configuration (total 5 seconds).' but it made no difference.
So I got my supplier to take this one back and give me another - however it behaves exactly the same!
I can not get access to configure this router.

I tried to use a wired connection (to port 2 I think) setting my laptop to an address on same network as would have been used via the wireless (192.168.88.0/24) but that did not work either.

Does anyone know what the trick is to get to configure these wireless RB4011's?

Regards,
Bryce S.

Hi I had the same problem and I use a wired connection (to port 6,7 or8 ) setting my pc to an address on same network as would have been used via the wireless (192.168.88.0/24) and it worked for me.

I had to set it aside... it got to be a full time job. I was encouraged to know I was not the only one with this issue, but further discouraged we both have similar problems. Is a full-reset not a FULL-RESET? I have yet to see anything on WiFi!

So you don't get an IP address through DHCP if you connect wired ( on any port but port 1 )?
Are you sure you did a reset after 5 seconds and not 10 seconds (which puts the device in CAP mode)?

If you have a serial cable you could also try connecting to the (RJ45) serial port on the back of the router. That should always work.

Which LED flashes? The per port ACT LEDs or the SFP+ one? Not clear in any docs I have seen.

Hi,

thanks for your replies.

I tried the wired connection on same subnet, does not work on any of the ports.

Microtik support said I should upgrade the routerOS and do a reset, so I upgraded it to 6.43.8 (the latest stable version) and performed the reset. Still no joy.

Which LED's should flash is confusing, I was initially seeing the SFP+ flash and thinking that was the reset, so I tried holding until the 10 ACT LED's flashed before releasing. Still no connection in browser to 192.168.88.1, still no MicroTik wifi network.

I just want to run 'QuickSet' and get the thing going, as I was assured by Microtik sales it would do.

While doing the router upgrade via Winbox, I did notice the top menu item was 'quickset', it is not the user friendly version that is expected from reading this manual: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Quickset
I gave it a whirl anyway...

First note - top left - choose the correct router mode, for me it was 'Home AP Dual'. Set the country and a couple of IP address stuff until it was happy to apply it.
Ended up with a WiFi network, but obviously got stuff wrong as can't connect to it, seems DHCP is failing to dish up addresses but I did set it to use a range on same network, so still no QuickSet, get connection timed out errors.
Got to prove I have reset working, as doing another reset removed my MicroTik wifi network.
But now can't even connect to it with Winbox :( Even after resetting from backup RouterBOOT loader by holding reset as plugging power back in doesn't let winbox back in.

Very frustrating, such a waste of time for such a high end business grade product (my opinion is changing on that currently).

Regards, Bryce

Where did you purchase it from? Seems like the device was not preconfigured in the normal way. The WiFi network must be active out of the box, unless somebody has used it before

Hi normis, our regular computer supplier would have got it from the local Microtik distributor I think, who is in Rangiora, New Zealand. This is the second unit that is not configured 'out of the box'. Is it likely two were used before, seems odd...
