Cloud Router Switch administration

Fri Feb 08, 2019 10:24 am

Hi all,
Last night I purchased CRS328-4C-20S-4S+RM switch. I don't have any prior experience with these so I have few newbie questions. My intention is to drop ISP router at some point as I manage to grasp sufficient knowledge with this device. For the time being, I would like to administer it first, and this is actually my first question: how to wire it in order to do so? I don't own SFP ports (yet) to connect it to my current router (the one from the ISP). I see that there are 'combo' ports, when I put wire in it, there are both LEDs blinking but I cant connect using 192.168.88.1/admin via WinBox. I tried direct connection from PC to 'combo' and 'console' ports, but still no success.Shall I buy at least 2 SFP ports first. or I am doing something terribly wrong?

Thank you kindly

Use one of combo ports for connection to PC.
Do You see device in Winbox? Try to connect using MAC address.

You'll be rewarded to learn RouterOS, but it will take you 100 hours. If you're post count goes up, it will encourage us to help you. For now, start slow. Read, read, read. This is going to take you awhile.

I managed to connect directly from my MacMini to the T3 combined port and after I turned off WiFi on MacMini - router was shown in WinBox.

My next question is this: router from my ISP has cable internet input (coax cable) and 4 RJ outputs. is it OK that I connect one of these 4 outputs (RJ45) to the Mikrotik router over SFP (one of 20 ports)? In that case, will I have network in any other 19 SFP ports and combo ports (also, what are exactly combo ports).

Opportunity to work/learn RouterOS was one of the reasons I decided to purchase MikroTik

Thank you kindly

Please keep in mind, this device is a switch, with some routing capabilities. So depending on your internet speed, you might have to rethink dropping ISP router or buy another Mikrotik Router in addition to the switch to replace ISP router.

Based on limited info in this thread, it seems you have gone the wrong way around purchasing hardware before understanding what is available and what will meet your requirements.

It will be difficult to answer accurately without knowing what your internet link size / speed, what routing protocols are used, i.e. BGP, etc, but in SOHO environment, I think a Mikrotik hEX (RB750Gr3) as a "Router only" is very good as addition to the switch you already bought. There are better than hEX but also costs more, and like I said, all depends on your requirements.

I have one R610 server with few VMs hosted on it. I want to have basic routing (so I can create NATs), firewall and DHCP for VMs, my laptop and one or two spare PCs. Internet is cable, 100 Mbps download, 8 Mbps upload. I also intend to attach one small, plain switch to Mikrotik's output in order to feed bunch of SBCs with network.

Important thing is that I have many port forwards (to redirect incoming SSH), which I found limited on my current router from ISP: there are not enough ports available and also some fields on form simply does not work (eg I want to forward a port, setup things but it does not work until I move this declaration to another field). Not sure is this HW or SW/FW issue

I think for 100Mb internet link, CRS328-4C-20S-4S+RM will suffice, but also note that the CRS328-4C-20S-4S+RM is mainly a Fibre switch, i.e. mainly for connecting fibre cables. It does have 4 x combo ports and you will need to buy modules for these ports in order to use UTP.

From your explanation, again bit limited as I have no idea what you define "SBC's", but it sounds like a small SOHO environment, then I would think a HAP AC2 and a RB260 switch (depending on number of ports required) will suffice very well.

The Hap AC2 will also add some WiFi to the environment.

SBC-Single Board Computer, I have Raspi3, BeagleBone, Udoo and Odroid and few others. Can my current switch support given requirements, regarding NAT/Firewall/DHCP/PortForward?

I ordered few SFP ports so I can utilize the device better.

One bit unrelated question: is there a better way to redirect SSH incoming traffic than using port forwards? Say I want to access any of my SBCs: there is one public IP but I will set different DNS records for it based on SBC host name. I would like to access all of those using port 22, but regarding the name, router (or some SW) will redirect traffic to proper SBC based on name?

Thanks

Re: Cloud Router Switch administration  [SOLVED]

And here I thought SBC = Small Business Community :-)

Yes, run the device in Router OS, not Switch OS

Depend on what you want to do when accessing the devices, the easiest will be to use VPN, then you become part of the internal network and can access the devices. I do not think using different DNS names is going to work, as all DNS does is to change a name to IP Address in order to find your device / computer on the network (WWW)
