Noob with very simple config question :-)

Wed May 06, 2020 11:30 pm

Hi,

I have just plugged in my brand new CRS305-1G-4S+IN

I was blown away by the configuration screens, I am by a long way not a network expert and thought this was just a simple switch, how wrong I was! :lol:

My simple need for this switch is to do the following, can anyone please let me know if it is possible as I feel I am going to have to factory reset it anyway as not 100% sure what I am doing!

I have a Desktop & 2 unRAID servers all running 10gbe on 192.168.11.*
I have a standard LAN running on 192.168.0.*

Can I have the 4 sfp+ ports all running on 192.168.11.* and the LAN port running on 192.168.0.* and if so which of the unbelievable amounts of config screens would I do this :-D

Lastly, I have the interface cards on all 3 devices using an MTU of 9000 should I set this in the switch or is it automatic?

Thank you so much in advance!

I dont have that device but I believe there are two ways to manage the switch
1 - as in using the Router OS or ROS
2- Using Switch OS SWOS

The second option may be simpler or at least look more like a traditional managed switch approach.

Give the device for example the IP 192.168.0.1/20, then you just can attach your client devices to it and ready you are.
That setting you can make in the web interface under the tab "Quick Set", similar if you use the WinBox windows tool instead.

The said /20 subnet mask covers the IP range from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.15.254.
(if you instead take /17 then you can leave the default device IP 192.168.88.1 as is. Then the IP range goes upto 192.168.127.254)
$ ipcalc 192.168.0.0/20
Address: 192.168.0.0 11000000.10101000.0000 0000.00000000
Netmask: 255.255.240.0 = 20 11111111.11111111.1111 0000.00000000
Wildcard: 0.0.15.255 00000000.00000000.0000 1111.11111111
=>
Network: 192.168.0.0/20 11000000.10101000.0000 0000.00000000
HostMin: 192.168.0.1 11000000.10101000.0000 0000.00000001
HostMax: 192.168.15.254 11000000.10101000.0000 1111.11111110
Broadcast: 192.168.15.255 11000000.10101000.0000 1111.11111111
Hosts/Net: 4094 Class C, Private Internet
Of course: on the client machines you should change the subnet mask to the same...

Regarding MTU: your device has these defaults or maximums (s. table and command here https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:M ... uterBoards ):
CRS305-1G-4S+ ether1:10218; sfp-sfpplus1-sfp-sfpplus4:10218
