Outdoor AP?

Mon May 18, 2020 7:08 pm

Hello, I'm thinking of deploying a Mikrotik Wireless Wire to provide strong signal from my home office to my shed, then from there run an Outdoor AP.

I know Ubiquiti has the UAP-AC-LR for long range, what is the Mikrotik equivalent for outdoor long range use?

Thanks,
Tom.

The wAP AC is an excellent outdoor AP.

I actually own one, never thought of using it outdoors. Might have to, it's not being used at the moment.

Thank you for the info, will give it a shot.

wAP is an outdoor/indoor omnidirectional AP. Good for delivering wifi connection to clients.
I know that different vendors promote their "strong" AP's as links to the next AP, but that is not a very good solution.
(The "strong" TX power might be only there at illegal settings, and being omnidirectional there is a huge loss in the unintended directions)
Even an Omnitik has a better antenna spectrum (and gain) but is still omnidirectional.
The AP to AP link requirements are quite different from the AP-client requirements.

Depending on the distance you must select what you need. E.G. I use 2 "SXTsq 5 ac" and then a regular AP (like cAP, hAP, wAP) for the clients. Advantage is that you can use different channels for the link and for the clients. But many hardware combinations are possible, so maybe one SXTsq will do pointing to the AP in the shed, to make a good link.

Not all the combination are in this list.

But you can count with the antenna gain in the specs for making the link. wAP-wAP would be 2+2=4dBi, SXTsq 5ac + wAP would be 2+16=18dBi, Omnitik + wAP is 7.5+2=9.5dBi
(There are also sector antenna if you need multiple links) I also use "SXT SA 5 ac" with multiple "SXTsq ac".
6dBi more gain will double the supported distance for a certain interface speed (MCS level)

The wireless wire are fantastic products, waiting for Normis to send me a complimentary pair of course.
If he has a spare wireless wire dish set for me, even better!!
Would be great from tx signal from the house down to the water. No electricityy or shed down there so perhaps a battery for when I need an active AP?

For an an outdoor unit, why use an indoor piece of kit??

Ended up getting a Netmetal ac2, should be in on Tuesday.

Absolutely loving the Wireless Wire, highest ping to it was 5ms, usually 1-2ms. Incredible performance so far, powering it over PoE via CRS112 from my shed.
