increase throughput by linking 100mbps ports

Thu Jul 02, 2020 11:28 pm

Hello,

I was recently upgraded to a 300 mbps ethernet link from my ISP but the device I use hAP ac lite TC only has 100 mbps ports. So currently I only get about 90-95 megabits speeds due to port limitation.

I also have a RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN lying around, which has five gigabit ports, but it doesn't have WiFi radio ever since a lightning strike hit it a few years back. It is currently just a gigabit router / switch.

I wonder whether there is a way to plug the ISP cable to one of the gigabit ports on the RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN, and then connect that with 2 or 3 cables to the hAP ac lite in order to get the full 300 mbps throughput (or anything above 100 mbps would be nice). I'm thinking of bonding or similar approach.

I know it'd be a lot easier to just buy another AP with gigabit ports and 5GHz WiFi radio but I'm hoping that there's a way to utilize my existing equipment.

Thanks!

Yes you can use bonding to do this! But even if you do this you will not get never more thane 100Mbps in WiFi of hAP AC Lite

Thanks a lot for the reply! I tried bonding with 802.3ad mode and managed to get to 160-165 mbps on the 5Ghz radio of the hap ac lite - quite unexpected! While still about half the 300 mbps, it will do for time being :)

Could you pls suggest which mikrotik AP can get me all the way up to 300 on wifi?

I would suggest HAP AC2, cheaper but more powerful than HAP AC (which I own).

Adding more info: I had to use balance-rr mode for the bonding interface, otherwise the outgoing traffic will only use 1 of the interfaces (and is thus limited to 100 mbps). I now achieve ~220 megabits per second download speed / 140 megabits upload, on the cheap hap ac lite. Better than what I was hoping for :)
