Installing RouterOS via iPXE to headless Embedded Board x86 & Rant.

Tue Jul 28, 2020 11:46 pm

Hello everyone,,

Direct to the point, is it even possible in the first place?

So the story was, I have problem installing RouterOS via Netinstall to SD Card in my Alix APU1C4. So as a solution, I install the RouterOS via ISO from VMWare to direct mounted disk. And that particular disk is then transferred to the Board. This is a very risky thing to do.

Why risky? It happened to me twice when upgrading, 6.13rc7 to 6.13-release, the boot file corrupted, it will be stuck on Loading....... forever. Another was during 6.14rc8 to 6.14rc9 update, same thing happened. After finding what is the issue, the iPXE on the Alix board turns ON by itself after few boot failure, this somehow wiped the bootloader installed at the RouterOS SD Card.

Story aside, now I want to actually implement a TFTP Server that supports iPXE booting and install RouterBOOT in the process for Netinstall through EtherBoot. Thus my first question is, is it even possible. My second question is, how?

Thanks.
