"ERROR: could not connect to 192.168.1.1"

Tue Oct 13, 2020 2:08 pm

Hello guys,
as a total beginner, I just installed WinBox (64bis) v.3.27.
After having entered:
- under "Connect To" my router address (192.168.1.1);
- under "Login" and "Password" the sole user name and passphrase my router's captive portal gives, respectively,
I got "ERROR: could not connect to 192.168.1.1"
Why?
Thanks :-)

What is this IP address and where did you get it? Please follow the instructions in the box, the address should be 192.168.88.1

What router/device are you connecting to and is it the first time connecting? (new unit)
(typically you connect your PC via ethernet port 2)

Hello normis,
once again as a total beginner, I'm trying to connect Winbox with my wireless router, which "default gateway", according to ipconfig, is 192.168.1.1
It seems to be the router's address, for typing "192.168.1.1" in my browser opens "http://192.168.1.1/7.3.8/gui/tpl/src/home/login.html", which is the router's captive portal I'd like to circumvent.
Having followed your advice by entering "192.168.88.1" gave the same error message.
By the way, are you having a good day?
Marc

Hello anav,
the router brand is Sagemcom. Its model would be Fast@3464, but my internet provider put its sticker maybe on that information.
If you are talking about "ports", I presume that using the device by Wi-fi ─ since a year, hence no new unit ─ would be a first mistake? :-)
If it is, could you explain why?
Thanks ;-)

This is definitely not a MikroTik device and you can't use Winbox for it.

Really, is this the best use of the top dogs/banana's time? LOL>
Shouldn't he be like working on documentation for the hiring bwpl to fix wifi, or coding up fq_strudel or something.
(MTUNA "Immutable Law" - Grab the easy posts - I dont recall Normis passing the exam????)

Did you know......
Normis charges to MT for advice on forums $100 Euros per post ( on top of the exorbitant salary)
MT adds cost of Normis's advice on forums, to MT products sold to consumers.
With posts like these we are really getting ripped off.

(1) Please someone at MT place a monitor script on Normis' laptop that prevents answering questions that are bogus!!!
(2) Please add to his contract that Normis is to only provide his precious posts for those where his gravitas can move the earth so to speak.
(3) I volunteer to sit on a tribunal that decides whether the post is worthy of $100 Euros or not in which case we can deduct $100 Euros :-))))

I don't understand the private joke, but I presume that my beginner's question was dumb.
Sorry for having disturbed.

Perhaps you will have more luck here:

Reading a few more posts, nobody likes sagecom products.........

(still not clear if you have any mikrotik products in the mix???)

thanks for the posts, anav,
they show that Sagemcom is unpopular.
Well, when my internet provider sends me "its" router, hiding its brand and model, by insisting that only "its" device can work with "its" internet, I as a non-expert must undergo its mountain of lies humble step by humble step. :-)
Congratulations on being experts and thanks for your feed-back guys !

Sorry your experience has been less than satisfactory. Try to find out what other users are doing in your local area as that may provide a path to the best mix of equipment.

Skipping the jokes. You have a device made by some other company. Other brand. This forum is for MikroTik devices, and the Winbox tool is also only for MikroTik devices. We really don't know how to connect to the device your ISP has given you. Maybe the ISP knows how to help.

Hey, I am also a total beginner.
I am getting the same error, but I only get it when I connect my computer to my phone's hotspot or a different wifi. Do I need to be connected to the mikrotik's same wifi to access winbox? I have seen people that does not do it. Help please.

Not sure of the question here but yes you need to be "inside the LAN" of the router to access the router via winbox etc.
If not then typically one setups IKEv2 VPN to connect to the router securely and then use the smartphone app to configure.
