PoE to power RouterBoard 951Ui 2HnD

Tue Mar 16, 2021 3:46 pm

Hello all,

I am trying to use PoE to supply my RouterBoard with power. I have a PoE injector that provides up to 48V (15W, 1A). How might I configure my RouterBoard to accept power inline?

My PoE injector works for all my other PoE devices (ex, VoIP telephone), but when I plug it into the RouterBoard port labeled "PoE In" the RouterBoard does not power on.

Thanks!

In short: PoE injector and RB951Ui are not compatible.

Since you're mentioning 48V PoE ... I'll assume it's a PoE injector adhering to 802.3af/at standard. Your RB951Ui on the other hand only supports passive PoE (passive means it doesn't do any active handshake with PSE) and accepts voltages between 8V and 30V ... which means you should be lucky if your PoE did hanshake properly and did not apply full 48V to RB device as it would probably damage it.

Thanks for the reply, it is specified as 802.3af compliant. So per your details, it will not be compatible.

Are there any passive PoE devices that are recommended to power a RouterBoard?

Where is this particular model listed as 802.3 af/at compliant?

Mikrotik is selling its own passive PoE injector RBGPOE. There is (or used to be?) a slightly cheaper variant RBPOE (note no "G" in name) which is for 100Mbps ethernet only. RBGPOE is compatible with all Mikrotik passive PoE in devices. It is powered from the power adapter which is provided with device itself.

Meaning the injector, not RB. Thanks for additional information.
