Groove 52Hpn - can't talk to it after reset << wireshark trace added

Fri May 14, 2021 8:16 am

From all I have seen the Groove devices are supposed to default to 192.168.88.1 I bought this unit used, I did the plug in with the reset tab held in, the lights danced and flickered, the unit beeped a couple of times and the bar graph zipped up and down a few times, but from the Windows command prompt, when I run an Ipconfig, it shows the router IP is 192.168.1.1. This IP address has no browser responding, won't respond to ping or to Winbox with the 192.168.1.1 is supplied. Has someone zapped the firmware or something in this until and how would I begin to recover it?

RESULT OF IPCONFIG:

I've had batches of Grooves that had a default configuration as an AP/Bridge with no IP. Does the Groove show up in Winbox with an IP of 0.0.0.0 if connected by ethernet then use the Mac address to connect? Check your wireless device to see if your Groove is broadcasting a Network name of Mikrotik-xxxxxx. If so you can connect to that for initial configuration. If you don't have an ethernet connector on your laptop then you should get a USB to ethernet adapter for time like this.

Re: Groove 52Hpn - can't talk to it after reset

Thank you for your reply. I have tried a recently purchased Windows 10 laptop with only a USB-c to LAN adapter available to connect. I used the Windows 10 system both with and without an Ethernet switch and could not connect using netinstall vai either direct connect or switched. I also today tried netinstall using a Windows 7 device which has a built in LAN adapter on the laptop. On both devices, I set the LAN static address to 192.168.88.2 and the gateway to 192.168.88.1 (tried with and without a gateway setting). On both laptops, I totally disabled the Windows Firewall. On netinstall, on both I clicked the Net Booting button and entered an Ip of 192.168.88.3 and I enabled the feature.

I recently purchased 3 different used Groove 52Hpn devices and I am trying to get one working. I am using the same injector I use with an Alfa Tube with a 2A supply that shows green indicator lamps to indicate the device is properly powered with the 12v power supply being injected into passive POE. I use a blunt toothpick to hold in the RESET button at the time of applying power, and count off 15 seconds which usually shows the sequence of lights of: single green lamp on, then 5 lamp simulated bar starts flashing, then only the singe green lamp, then all lights off and then I release. In a few seconds on the Windows 7 laptop with netinstall panel open, both the single green light on the Groove HPn starts flashing and the yellow lamp on the laptop that shows LAN activity starts flashing rapidly as if data is flowing well. The Groove then beeps about 20 seconds into this process and then begins a slow repeating single "off" flash of the single green light while the yellow light on the laptop LAN adapter flashes a split second after each single flash green light "off" period on the Groove. Then netinstall panel remains open on the Windows laptop and no MAC address ever appears in the list to install the software that I browsed to earlier. This slow cycle of the single green light staying on with about a split second "off" period, seen about every second and with the yellow lamp on the laptop LAN indicator flashing in unison. Nothing ever shows up on the netinstall menu. I've done multiple power re-sequencing on the Groove and I've closed netinstall and restarted it while the router is (apparently) in network boot mode. Nothing works. (Thanks)

You didn't mention Winbox.exe. Forget Netinstall for the moment and see if you can get winbox to see your Groove. Do not try to work through a router only connect directly to the Groove. If Winbox finds the Groove it will display a line of information about it in white area in the lower half of the Winbox window. If it does then click on the MAC address to put it in the Connect to: box and try to connect.

Your Grooves may have had an open source OS installed in which case Netinstall is probably the only thing you can try to get routerOS back on the Grooves. I would suggest popping the escutcheon plate off the bottom of the Groove to expose the reset button so you can use your finger to hold the button in. It is very easy to break the reset switch when using the hole to access the button.

When you try to Netinstall does Netinstall find the Grooves hard drive and display it in the white window in the upper left of the Netinstall window?

Re: Groove 52Hpn - can't talk to it after reset

I have started Wireshark on the HP Laptop, capturing exclusively the Grooe 52Hpn traffic after power on of the device while holding in the RESET button for 15 seconds at which time all the lights go off and then releasing the button. The netinstall program never initializes to show the Groove MAC address.

Re: Groove 52Hpn - can't talk to it after reset

Mon May 17, 2021 2:16 am

I've had batches of Grooves that had a default configuration as an AP/Bridge with no IP. Does the Groove show up in Winbox with an IP of 0.0.0.0 if connected by ethernet then use the Mac address to connect? Check your wireless device to see if your Groove is broadcasting a Network name of Mikrotik-xxxxxx. If so you can connect to that for initial configuration. If you don't have an ethernet connector on your laptop then you should get a USB to ethernet adapter for time like this.
No network broadcasting.

Re: Groove 52Hpn - can't talk to it after reset << wireshark trace added

Mon May 17, 2021 6:36 am

From what I can see, the modem never goes into boot mode and the protocol from Wireshark monitoring seems similar no matter if I hold the reset button in for 15 seconds, 30 seconds, the first beep or the double beep. I tried several more laptops today and changed the address to 10.0.0.1 (assumed) for the router and 10.0.0.50 for my laptop and 10.0.0.51 for the boot server in netinstall. Netinstall would never respond.

OK, I reset everything back to normal regarding the ethernet on the laptop, removed some arp definitions that I also tried and set the LAN adapter back to DHCP. I now started Wireshark and Winbox and this time after entering the MAC address of the Groove 52Hpn into the winbox address box, an error message appeared that I needed to switch to "legacy mode". I went under tools on winbox and switched "Legacy mode" and Winbox then gave me the warning that the ID and password were not correct. I tried several buttons to overlay the password and nothing worked. So it looks like now I have a "legacy device". I've googled this and I don't see anyone else talking about Groove devices with legacy settings. Makes me think this is a really old series of units and perhaps either the hardware or firmware can't even recognize this modern netinstall I am trying to use. Still the reason that no sequence that I can come up with will reset the unit, at least from holding down on the reset button - this concerns me a great deal why it cannot be reset.

I am now wondering if the reset key is even working. I have 3 identical, same issues but from same source.

A legacy device just means you have an early version of routerOS on the Groove. This would be remedied if you can get Netinstall to work. To get netinstall to work you should be holding the reset button in until the Netinstall Router/Drives box finds your Groove as shown in Attachment2 . This is usually more than 15 seconds and less than 30 seconds. If it doesn't display the information then you can't go further with Netinstall.

Have you been able to get winbox to find the Groove? You must be connect by ethernet to the Groove with no router involved. The winbox window will a line of information about the Groove in the lower part of the window as shown in Attachment1 .

If you can't get Netinstall to work and winbox doesn't find your Groove then you probably have bad Grooves or Grooves that have had another operating system installed on them.

I can't thank you enough for all your help. This has been a learning experience. Either via software or an altered firmware bit, the reset key would never reset the device. Additionally the unit would never go into boot mode with the 15 second hold down either and that must have been the result of whatever the previous owner had done to it. I did get Winbox to attempt to connect but the password was always wrong because it was that of the previous owner and thus unknown. I obtained some channel locks to remove the ring from the end, popped the circuit board out and I discovered a split-ring that looked like it was a screw mounting hole but the foil pattern was 2 half rings. I did further research and found that this seems to be the only way to reset this device to factory defaults, at least at the 6.42 firmware level I found this device later was last upgraded. I tried powering up with the split rings shorted but my screwdriver or knife would not short the junction so I finally clipped a small alligator clip and made sure the teeth bit into both sides of the split ring. Then I powered it up with the aligator clip on the PCB. This time the device made a warbling sound I have never heard before, maybe 10 beeps in 1 second, like a bird. I removed the jumper, waited until all the lights stopped flashing except the one with the slow 1 pulse per second single lamp and then I rebooted the router with a POR. Now I had the address of 192.168.88.1 that showed in the c:\ipconfig window from Windows 10. I could not attach with the browser but Winbox would now attach and came up with the MAC in the address list without me having to do anything. (BE SURE to unplug the actual usb-c plug to reset the USB adapter if you have one because just pulling out the ethernet will not reset the interface like on a conventional laptop that has a built-in LAN connector; in fact you will need to do this every time you change tasks after doing configuration changes). So I opened Winbox and checked some settings, then signed off. At this point I reset the usb-c connector again and started Netinstall with the file I previously downloaded from Microtic, the file routeros-mipsbe-6.48.2.npk loaded into the same directory as winbox. This time I powered off the router and held in the button with the blunt end of a broken toothpick. The single lamp nearest the RJ-45 starts to blink and then all the lights blink in unison about 7 times or so, then the single green light remains on for a moment more, flashing may 7 more times and then suddenly all the lamps turn off and this is the time to drop the reset, about at the 15 second mark. I returned to the laptop and netinstall had already automatically picked up the device MAC and was ready to load in the new firmware 6.48.2. I clicked Install box next to the named firmware file in the list and then clicked the Install button. It first formatted the drive then replaced the firmware. I waited for all the lamps to settle to a blink now and then, then power on reset the device, then the new firmware had killed the 192.168.88.1 IP address that was set with the previous reset of the old original firmware. So I reset the usb-c to LAN adapter again to ensure by using the c:\ipconfig to check that I had indeed lost the 192.168.88.1 IP address and yes, upgrading firmware had killed the DHCP address inside the router. So I once again started Winbox and successfully logged into the router. At this point I used Winbox to change the interface to automatic, changed the protocol on the wireless from 5Ghz to the 2Ghz range, applied those changes, reloaded the browser screen, scanned and set my local IP address to my home networks gateway address (this will be the gateway to my router WAN jack) and I once again scanned for a remote AP signal, set the password for that wifi, applied the configuration and once connected ,I scanned for updates which didn't find anything since I just updated. So then after setting the device to my gateway ID 192.168.32.1 and checking the NAT and DHCP boxes, updating the configuration, resetting my usb-c to LAN connector again, this time I found the new DHCP data showing what I has set. I browsed to 192.168.32.1 to verify and everything was the way I had wanted. So I carried the device up to the roof on a ladder, installed my antenna and coax and I am communicating over it now with this post. Thanks for everything!!!
