How can I make a VPN connection appear to be on my network's IP range?

Sat Jul 31, 2021 7:48 am

TLDR: I want to play lan games over a L2TP VPN. And everything works for most games.
But a few games don't allow manually entering an IP and only look for games in your IP range. Which means a standard VPN across networks with routes between isn't enough to make it work.

I want to play old games online with a friend over a VPN connection without using software like hamachi. I've already setup a VPN across 2 mikrotik routers between our networks and everything works between them as you would expect. I currently am setup with my network being 192.168.1.0/24 and his 192.168.10.0/24

A few example games are C&C red alert, and splinter cell chaos theory. They don't allow IP addresses to be entered and don't appear to look for IP addresses for games outside of your main network.

I was looking into the solutions and I was curious if I could do a 1:1 nat across some fake IP. like all traffic to
192.168.1.10 would go to 192.168.10.249 (The end IP) and
192.168.10.10 would go to 192.168.1.100 (The other end IP)
I played with Src and Dst nats to no luck.

Does anyone have advice on this topic?

Are you sure those games are looking for other game servers/clients in L3 and not in L2 layer? If so, L2TP is operating only in L3. If you need L2 functionality, then you might need something like EoIP tunnel on top of it.

That much I'm not 100% sure of. Although any idea is worth trying! I just assume the game is super basic and looks for clients under your network for lan ip range.
