DNS Override

Mon Aug 09, 2021 5:44 pm

I'm going to be switching from a custom pfSense box to an RB4011iGS+RM, the main thing I am not yet sure how to do (and I've probably just missed it in the documentation) is how do I override some specific domain names (for my personal domain) to point back to a machine on my LAN. One specific example is the domain name for my Home Assistant install, outside it is home.domain.com and works fine, but inside I want home.domain.com to point to the internal IP of the machine hosting it.

There is also a new 5009 model to consider.
https://mikrotik.com/product/rb5009ug_s_in

There is lots of flexibility on DNS settings shouldnt be an issue.
Its probably a hairpin nat type of setup.

I considered the 5009, but considering my needs the 4001 is plenty (plus less expensive). Sadly I live in the uS where I'm lucky to have more than one ISP to choose from but none are that fast.

I know but 199 to 219, is not much of a difference but heck I dont understand the value of the 5009 compared to the RB4011......

Well okay rextended concur, should not mix up DNS and hairpin nat, my bad.
Yes to the oP lots of ways to configure DNS

Well, I got it from Streakwave for $162, they don't have the 5009 yet.

You can buy the RB5009 from Balticnetworks for $186.50 + their Tech Support for MikroTik is outstanding. The RB5009 is dramatically superior to the RB4011 ... well worth the money without one shadow of doubt.

I suppose more future-proofing is a good idea. It's not like my current pfSense box is not way overpowered (part of its issue is power use). I guess time to see if I can cancel my Streakwave order.

Given that the RB5009 doesn't look like it will be in stock until December, what is a decent alternative that can handle 5 VLANs (prefer gigabit routing between them)? hEX S?

Yeah the hex S is a great holdover until a new unit can be had!!
Later it makes either a great backup router unit or a managed switch on a desk.......

Well, I do still have an unused EdgeRouter X SFP that can be used as a managed switch still.

Would the recommended config be to use the ethernet ports on a VLAN-aware switch with each port set to handle only one of my VLANs and something like the S-RJ01 for the WAN? I should mention, my main switch is a MikroTik CSS326-24G-2S+.
