Recommended Upgrade path from RouterOS 5.20?

Tue Aug 10, 2021 5:02 pm

Hi,
If this is an FAQ, then sorry. I did try a search. Honest.

I have a RB2011UAS-2HnD based router that's been chugging along 'just fine' for many years. It's always been 'just fine' & it never moved off RouterOS 5.20. I'm now in a situation where it looks as though an update would be a good move.

5.20 to 6.48 is a long way. I can't see any later v5 downloads to use as a stepping stone (& the Auto-Upgrade page isn't showing any resources anyway), so would someone please be kind enough to suggest what is the best upgrade path for me to take?

Just upgrade to the latest stable version and you're done.

First upgrade to 6.47.10,
then do
/export file=config
on terminal
save locally the file,
copy the file,
open the copy,
censore (not delete anything) sensible information,
put the file on forum for cleaning
then if you have a pc, do a clean netinstall,
and after netinstall re-import the export (not the backup)

Thanks for the advice. I may have been being over cautious, but I figure that with this sort of thing over cautious is a good way to go. ;)

Though I have to agree on safety first...running an ancient RouterOS version might not be real cautious behaviour. Makes sense to upgrade!

Version 6.41 changed a lot so IMHO you should:

A. Have backup for your 5.20 configuration int text (/export ...) not in binary form !!!!
B. Have access to 5.20 firmware just "in case of bringing it back to 5.20"
C. Have backup for your 5.20 configuration :)

D. Upgrade to the latest 5.xx version ... http://www.routeros.co.id/download/archive/5.26/
E. Check if it works

F. Have backup for your 5.26 configuration
G. Have access to 5.26 firmware just "in case of bringing it back to 5.26"

H. Upgrade to 6.40.x https://mikrotik.com/download/archive
I. Backup ....

J. Upgrade to 6.41
K. Backup ...

L. Upgrade to the latest stable

Always check, check, check ....

Unless its super complex, I would export the configuration,
Netinsall the latest long version and manually insert the config back (with knowledge of how to config today).

You will probably have some differences between the versions that will break in the upgrade process anyway
and thus you are going to waste too much time using Bartozs suggestion.

Just a different perspective to consider.,

I'm with @anav. Default config of recent versions of ROS is so much better than it used to be, specially firewall. If your currently running config is not something imensely special, it would be better to start off from defaults. Textual export (bullet A from post of @BartoszP) can help as a cheat sheet just to remember what might be missing ... but certainly not how to do it.
