Optical ring setting

Thu Aug 12, 2021 12:05 pm

Hello.
I'm new to the Mikrotik world.
I have such a scheme (in the attachment).
Схема.pdf
It is necessary to organize an optical ring. Tell me how to do this?

Thanks.

What functionality should it provide?

Connect all together and make sure you have spanning tree turned on.

I hope you do not use CRS-8P as Router...

By default, everything works, but there is a delay of 2-3 seconds when talking on a smartphone

Switches are designed for switching, routers for routing.

CRS allows you do routing with ROS but it is a "bonus" funcionality and you should not expect efficency.
Maybe this model would fit your routing needs but maybe you should buy another device just for routing traffic from CRS.

Can't I adjust the optical ring on it?

Do not mix concepts.
Creating optical ring is not connected to routing. It's about connectivity on L2 level.
If you want traffic carried with your optical ring to be routed to Internet you need routing funcionality which could be done by any device managed with ROS in your ring but ... the architecture limits routing speed in fovour of switching. Routers are better in routing, switches in switching
Of course the more powerfull (expensive) device you buy the more raw power you have and the better base speeds you have in standard.
But it still does not mean that even the "biggest" CRS is designed to efficently route traffic.

If you look at the block diagram of your RB953GS-5HnT you may notice that only the first SFP cage is connected to the built-in switch chip, whereas the second SFP cage is connected directly to the SoC (CPU). That means all the transit L2 traffic goes through the CPU, which may be a seriously limiting factor, depending on your typical traffic. Check the /tool profile output to see if CPU on your RB953GS boards copes with the load.

Guys, this diagram is a test kit for assembling communications in the office at the workplace. Internet access is not needed here. At a real site, RB953GS-5HnT boards can be up to 200 pcs. connected to each other in optical rings on the surface. I planned to do this through RB4011iGS + RM. So on the test kit, I need to set up an optical ring for demonstration to potential clients.
