Second Router on Same Subnet - Does it route or ICMP Redirect

Fri Sep 24, 2021 1:33 pm

Hi,

An RB4011 on x.x.x.1 is the default gateway but has some routes pointing to a non-Mikrotik router on x.x.x.2. In this scenario, by default, does traffic get routed and forwarded to x.x.x.2, or does the RB4011 default gateway send ICMP redirects. I can't see any specific configuration relating to redirect. Searching for information has so far been unsuccessful, wherever I've seen the term "redirect" it turns out to be referring to NAT redirecting traffic to a different destination IP, rather than ICMP redirect.
Thanks, Tony S

ICMP redirects are sent when there is a more direct path within a layer 2 network segment https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_ ... ple-en.svg

Thanks, I'm aware of the theory, what I don't know is whether Mikrotik sends redirects by default, or whether such behaviour is configurable. Professionally I work with different kit, which redirects by default but that can be disabled on a per interface basis. Trying to find out if Mikrotik does the same. Very rarely I see issues with redirects, and need to disable.

Global, not per-interface, under /ip settings
accept-redirects (yes | no; Default: no)
send-redirects (yes | no; Default: yes)
