Chaining an Accespoint behind an Accespoint

Tue Oct 19, 2021 8:04 pm

Hello once again fellow MikroTikers,

to tune my home wife i bought a cAP-2nD and a Omnitik 5 PoE ac.
I am trying to of avoid a new long ethernet cable for the Omnitik 5. That is why i want to put the Omnitik behind the 2nd ethernet port of the cAP.
The cAP works fine but i cannot connect to the internet when i am connected to the Omnitik 5.
Both accesspoints are having the 192.168.88.1 IP, when i try to change it i cant connect to the accesspoint again and i need to reset the device.

To solve this i have 3 questions.
1. How do i access the webfig for a Mikrotik device from the same LAN without being directly connected via wifi.
2. How do i change the IP adress from atleast one accesspoint to avoid having the same ip twice?
3. What is most likely the configuration i missed during the setup?

Attached you can find the config for the cAP.
Solving question 1 would speed up troubleshooting for me by a lot :D

Best regards and thanks in advance

Simply change IP address from 192.168.88.1 to 192.168.88.2 and disable DHCP server.

Regards.

I have never heard of MT devices tuning a spouse out, most just use loud music. :-0

Quick question is the capac connected to the ISP modem or is there a router in between??

Regards.
As soon as i change the IP and disable DHCP i cannot connect to the Accesspoint anymore.
I also tried to set it to 192.168.1.2 as my router has the ip 192.168.1.1.

Guten Morgen,
yes that is my plan. I just want to use the Miktotik devices as wifi accesspoints.

It is connected via lan to my Fritz!Box 7490 Router.

Best regards! :)

So I tried to tweak a little bit more but still unsuccessful.
On the Quick Set page I tired the config you can see attached.

But it wont work. I think i am doing something very stupid wrong.
Note that the IP 192.168.1.2 is below the DHCP Range of the Fritz!Box Router.

Do I need to untick the Firewall Router tick? I think that might cause a problem since it is just supposed to be an AP?

Best regards :)

Ugggg quickstep?

Would you in public pick your nose?
It grosses people out and you could be sticking a virus up your nose!

Well, quickstep is similiar. Using it grosses out all MT folks here. :) Although not as bad as virus, it does usually cockup the config!!!

It should have been name quicksand because it should only be used to select mode of operation and thats it.
All config should be done from winbox.

Guten Abend,

Problem 1: You don't have 1 Network but 3-Networks
I quickly drew a small overview of you network (See attachment)

Very simply explained,
Top-Down communication isn't possible
Bottom-UP communication is possible

For exemple :
Wenn your Laptop is connected to your Omnitik-Wlan,
your will be able to communicate with every device on all 3 Network

But if you connect you Laptop to your Fritz.Box-WLAN
you will only be able to communicate with the Fritz.Box Network
Device in the Cap and Omnitik wont be visible.

Problem 2: Both CAP-2nD and Omnitik have the same IP-Range
Both cAP and Omnitik have the same IP-Range and are connected with each other.
So if you decide to keep all 3 Network, you will have to change the IP-Range of the Omnitik

Thanks for the Network sketch!

Maybe i am wrong but when i disable DHCP and assign the Acces Points to a IP of the Fritz!Box i should have one Network or?
The IP Adress Local field in the Quickset seems to be the same one as the IP of the Bridge. So i have to assign a IP adress of the Fritz!Box that is not used by its DHCP or does it has to be the same as the WAN Interface IP (192.168.1.57)?
The DNS Server and Gateway has to be equal to the ones of the Fritz!Box?

I´ll try to do this in the webfig menu and not the quick set.
Thanks for the help :)

So, all i had to do was to disable DHCP, give it a static ip adress outside of the DCHP range of the Fritz!Box and additionally add the Ether1 Port to the bridge.

Best regards and thanks for the help :)
