DHCP IP is not working. What am I doing wrong?

Mon Mar 10, 2008 11:48 am

Hi all,

Can anybody give me a hint on this problem?

I would like to receive a DHCP IP from a Linksys router on my Mikrotik router
So for i have only little success on it :(

I connected the the MK on ether1 to the Linksys router and both have a link light.
Next I went to IP>DHCP-Client and setup the following:
Interface: ether1
Add Default Route
Use Peer-DNS
Use Peer-NTP

Status is:Searching

From there nothing happens anymore.
I also cant see the Mikrotik Router on the ARP List on my Linksys router

However,I can see that datas somehow get thransfered as when I click on Interfaces, ether1 has Tx and Rx values which are changing

PS: When I set up ether1 with a static IP in the Linksys IP range, I can ping the Linksys router!
PS2: When I connect my Laptop the the Linksys router i get an IP address straight away. I tried cross over and straight through cables, but without any success

At the moment I have only WLAN under Interfaces, nothing else is showing up. Under Firewall, I have the seetings set to: NAT:Chain=srcnat, Out-int:ether1, Action: maquerade
I read that DHCP operates at udp 67 and 68. How can i check if that ports are opened and if no, what would be the right way to do this?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi ;
you should also select " add default gateway " and it will be better to add your MT id in the client id field .
be sure that the mac filter in your linksys router is not active , and if it active you shoud add your MT mac id in the linksys router fillter .
From there nothing happens anymore.

Chris
what do you mean by this ?
with best regards

Did you remember to enable the service? There aren't many entries for this.
/ip dhcp-client add interface=ether1 disabled=no

When you say to enter my MT client ID does this mean I enter in the field the MAC of the MT or Linksys router?
And is the format AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF or AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF

Thanks

Hi again ;
if you using mac filter in the linksys router then you should put the MAC of the MT inside the linksys router and then it will accept it .
if you do not use mac filter in your linksys router then ignore it .
the way how you should put the mac as aa-bb-cc-dd-ee-ff or aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff it depend on your linksys router .
also check the other reply asking you to check if the dhcp - client is enabled or not ?
with best regards .

Hi Chris,

Professionally I do not quickly understand why you should be using two routers at such a close range.

In any case, on the interface (ether1) that connects the Linksys configure:
/ip dhcp-client> add interface=ether1 disabled=no

If everything is ok, the following command will give you the Ips, DNSs, etc:

[admin@MikroTik] ip dhcp-client> print detail

If it works, fine OR why not configure static IP on the Linksys so you assign one to the MT, using the IP of the Linksys as the gateway in MT?

Unable to configure pppoe successfully in MT, I decided to use D-Link router since I could configure the pppoe in it and I made the LAN of the D-link static. I did this because I wanted to deploy ECMP(using two ISPs i.e ISP1 and ISP2)

If it works, please let us know which of the solutions. If it doesn’t let us know so we continue trouble shooting.
