Does your BIOS specify booting to the HD?
What version are you trying to install(Have you tried a different version?)?
What type of HD(IDE/SATA)?

If you are doing it just for testing I would suggesting a Virtual machine like VMWare.

Does your new machine have sata ports? Try turning them off in the BIOS.

As Louis said, make sure SATA support is disabled, this is necessary for legacy operating systems like XP (until your install the drivers).

Just had to do this last night, adding XP to a dual boot Vista system. (eish!)
