In 802.11b there was a desire for dual diversity.. using two antennas on a single radio on indoor wireless LANs. Then OFDM came along (802.11g and 802.11a) and really eliminated the need for dual diversity.

The use of two antenna connectors on a card are probably a carry over from that. The only real use I have found recently is when you physically damage a connector on the card it is nice to have a spare right there mounted on the card.

May be stupid idea 4 you but. You can use transmit and recevie with 2 antenna if one is connected main other one is connected aux. And making antennas one side is gonna protect your antenna and wi-fi ap from thunder well.
