Some Basic help with IP's

Mon May 18, 2009 9:00 pm

Hi

Well I thought I understood Networking until I got a Router Board 411.

Now I have been reading and reading and reading but most of what is being said is greek to me.

Now in a regular router you have Your Ip field ......your subnet mask Field ..............and Your gateway field and your DNS fields.

I Now sort of understand that in a RB OS the IP is followed by a /X which equates to the Subnet mask. IE /24 = 255.255.255.0

Question 1: is there a place where I can get this /x value for a subnet of 255.255.248.0

Now i have a RB 411A setup in AP-bridge Mode and a 411 Setup in Station Mode with IP's of 10.100.123.24/24 and 10.100.123.25/24 respectively. I can talk back and forth they are connected via the XR9 900mhz cards. I can do bandwidth tests between them and it works great. But when i connect the AP Lan port to my dlink router that has a IP address of 10.100.123.21 subnet of 255.255.248.0 I can not get on line through the RB 411 which is set as a station. What is wierd is if I hook my laptop up to the 411 that is in station mode I get an IP from my router yet I can not get online......In fact I can not even login to the router at 21 via the web interface. When I connect to the dlink router directly from my laptop I get online So I know the internet is available to the dlink router.

Now I have the 411A in Ap-bridge and the IP values are

Address = 10.100.123.24/24
Range =10.100.123.0
Boradcast =10.100.123.255

I have the 411 in Station mode and the IP values are

Address = 10.100.123.24/24
Range =10.100.123.0
Boradcast =10.100.123.255

I do not want the 411A to be a router I want it to pass data through to my router........I want my router to be the DHCP server.

What am I missing ??????

Thank you so much for your time in advance.

1st question about subnets. Try the link below.
http://www.subnet-calculator.com/
or
http://krow.net/dict/subnet.html

2nd question - what are you missing.
Route gateway and bridge interfaces.
Your dhcp interface will need to be bridge.

...but why not let the dlink hand out the dhcp??

Hi and thanks for the response

I do want the dlink to hand out the DHCP and it is handing out IP's ...........like I said when I connect my laptop to the station it gets an IP from my dlink yet I can not use a browser to log into the dlink nor can I get online.

I have a bridge and the Wlan1 and the ether1 are listed as ports in the bridge.

However in the interface list the ether1 line has a R and the little symbol under the name catagory is red not green like the wlan1 which leads me to believe I have an issue with my ether1 port

I have also discovered that if I hardwire into the Staion I can not ping or do a bandwidth test to the AP but when I connect to the AP I can ping and do a Bandwidth test to the Station.

Anyone have some suggestions??????????

Thanks in advance

OK.
It looks like the station and the AP have the same IP address unless you made a typo.
Let's give them the proper ip addresses.

The station and the AP need ip addresses in the same subnet.

Station - remove the /24 ip address and add 10.100.123.24/21
add route 10.100.123.21

AP - remove the /24 ip address and add 10.100.123.23/21 (if not already used)
add route 10.100.123.21

That will allow communication to the ap and station from the router.
Not sure why you can't get on the internet since you're getting dhcp from the router via the bridge.
Assuming that the station is also bridged. Is that the case?
If so, you may need to set wireless mode to station-pseudobridge.
Do you have any firewall rules on the station or the AP??

Hi thanks for the response

That was a Typo

I have the 411A in Ap-bridge and the IP values are

Address = 10.100.123.24/24
Range =10.100.123.0
Boradcast =10.100.123.255

I have the 411 in Station mode and the IP values are

Address = 10.100.123.25/24
Range =10.100.123.0
Boradcast =10.100.123.255

I thought the value in the /x position reffered to the subnet mask..............I see youare saying to put 21 there is that because that value points to the gateway IE the address of the dlink.

Now when yousay "add route" do you mean in the IP menu "routes"

The other thing I am confused about is why I can ping and speed test from the AP to the Station but not from the station to the AP ..........Yet my laptop gets an IP from the dlink through the wireless link and the ether1 port of the station.

once again thank you so much for taking the time to read and reply to my posts

Hey the pseudobridge on the station solved the ping and connection issue that is sooooo coool thank you.

So now why did Station not work why did it need to be in bridge.

I really want to learn and understand these boards!

Is not "station" what this is or is it that there is a device with an IP on the otherside of it so it needs to bridge those two devices.

/21 is the network for netmask 255.255.248.0

It was just a coincidence that your gateway is .21.

Since you're bridging, you really don't need the route to the gateway.
