VoIP PBX on RouterOS ?

Fri Aug 27, 2010 10:22 pm

Hi,

I came across MikroTik when I was Googling for really small form factor configurable routers.
I would like to install a VoIP PBX (Asterisk/Freeswitch or others) and interface with a analog phone line (something like Vonage in the US) and have other LAN ports for VoIP softphones/Hardphones. It does not have to do a whole lot of processing, no transcoding etc. I would like to know

1. Is this possible on RouterOS ?
2. I know PBX systems can require mpre powerful CPUs, but do you think the RB750G (640 MHz CPU I think) can handle this load. I would like to interface with a HDD (flash is also OK) I would need a analog line in card.

I would like to know what do you guys think about this. Is this feasible ? I would like to know what you think.

Thanks
John

RouterOS has no VoIP features whatsoever, and is not a PBX.

The only pice of this you can get from a routerboard (or RouterOS in general) is to run the asterisk "server" in a VM.
I have seen the 450G running a VM under metarouter that was hosting an asterisk server..

You will NOT get any analog interfaces. You can use SIP phones (ethernet) and then connect to a SIP provider....

I know that the person that was demonstrating it, said there was one piece "missing" from RouterOS to make the "system" complete.
I belive it was a protocol helper or something ( I cant remember ) ...

That is as about as close as you are going to get with RouterOS...

Older versions did have a H323 gateway, but it was pulled somewhare in the 3.X versions..

RouterOS doesn't let a user add arbitrary applications to it.
I haven't used anything from soekris but they make a board with a pci slot, which may or may not be useful for your asterisk pbx. http://www.soekris.com/net5501.htm

You may want to look at a Pika Warp. Small device, powerful & relatively inexpensive.

I didnt mention names in my last post as I didnt want him to get pestered...

In the conversation we had, he was saying there was a small thing missing from RouterOS or metarouter..

I cant remember what it was... I can drop him a line today and see if he remembers..
