Can't change newly set password.

Thu Aug 30, 2012 2:51 pm

Hello,
I've just configured my rb2011l and decided to enter admin password using provided web interface. I've set it and since that time I'm not able to log as admin with this password by using web interface. What's working is log in by using telnet or ssh, but not web interface. My new password contains following chars besides standard chars/numbers:
!|>-)
I've thought that some of those makes troubles to web front-end so I decided to change the password on command-line using /password command. Unfortunately always when I enter all three required values (old/new/confirm) I get following error:
failure: Bad old password!
As I said, I'm able to log in with this password into command-line. Any hint how to resolve this situation? Thanks!
Karel

Can you login with winbox? If yes from winbox you can see the current password.

Yes, I'm able to log in using password I'm using with telnet/ssh. However I'm not able to locate current password. Where it should be shown?
Thanks! Karel

You can't view the current password but you can modify it from winbox. In system -> users -> admin, here you can type a new password.

Yes, you are right! I've been able to change the password in winbox and once I've replaced characters:
!>)|
by something else I've been also able to log by using webfig. IMHO looks like an issue in webfig and also in console where I've not been able to change the password by /password command.
Thanks for your help!

What RouterOS version to you use?
5.14 on RB2011L license level 4.

Try to upgrade to 5.17 or above. Then you can try password with special characters from webfig.

If you can't use the /password command, just set it directly through /user set 0 password=
