It worked for me perfectly, passwords were recovered from backup file.
Maybe you did something wrong or maybe passwords are blank?

As mentioned in manual (http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Ro ... nformation),
to create and download backup files you need user with 'sensitive' policy turned on.

Run Winbox (log-in as user with 'sensitive' policy), go to 'Files', create and download to local computer newly created backup file.
Next upload backup file to http://mikrotikpasswordrecovery.com/ and click 'Show Passwords' button.

if you don't have full access, you can't do it. that is the purpose of the password, otherwise it would be a security hole. you can stop looking, there are no security holes. you must reinstall.

MY PC--Switch--Router ---- Router--Switch--RB
Two questions:
Is this router marked on your diagram as bold also MikroTik device and you have full access to it?
Is anybody on remote network able to reset RB to factory default using reset button?
Or maybe you are able to reset RB to default config from Winbox?
I don't know which user policy is needed to do 'Reset configuration', Normis probably knows this.

If both answers are 'yes', reset RB to factory default, next login to Router and from it, login to RB using MAC-Telnet (user: admin, no pass).
Your config will be lost but you gain access to RB and you will be able to reconfigure it.

Hello, how can you reset the admin password when RouterOS is a CHR vmdk image and not a phisical device with reset button? Obviously I have full access even to console.

Thanks in advance.

it has been forever since I logged into my box and I can not seem to get the right password

is their a way IF I find my backup config to find the password from that file ?

my other choice is to restore an old OS backup from this PC before we changed hardware / reinstalled as its user profile must have stored the password on that Ubuntu install

If you didn't log in for a while, I assume you didn't update the system. If you have winbox service enabled, then you might use vulnerability which was found and fixed over a year ago and get your login+password back.
proof-of-concept script is available here: https://github.com/BasuCert/WinboxPoC

Thanks for exploit link anyhow
a bit more thinking and I think all the files I need are on my ZFS array which I have not used for a long time also , will have to downgrade kernels to spin it back up

last upgrade was when we added the XR2: Ubiquiti Xtreme range 802.11b/g wireless interface

it looks like last time I accessed it was 24 Jul 2017 as that is when I downloaded winbox 3.18
but when ever I enter what I thought was the password I get
Error: could not fetch index

R_OS v5.25

any idea's what default file name is for backups ?

I am sure I had multiple admin users as well but can not remember it was all setup a decade ago , it used to show web-login through my modems router but it has not worked for quite sometime ( possibly when I disabled IPv6 )

I might mount my backup OS and transfer the wine settings across

found winbox.cfg from Wed 29 May 2013 10∶25∶29 AEST just shows how rock solid the little box has been, unattended for years :P

R_OS v5.25
Yea, that won't work...
Those vulnerable versions are from 2015-05-28 to 2018-04-20 ... (cca 6.30 - 6.42)
Your 5.25 is prehistoric (2013-04-25). I am honestly sorry because I really did not expect something like that.

In that case, I guess your OS backup is the way to go...

Bingo

found the right wine / winbox combination and got back in

now how do I change password without knowing it ....

at least it let me create another admin account

*edit* maybe the old versions want the old password first ? as when ever I tried changing it it asked for it ?

I am tempted in doing a upgrade but its been soo long I need to relearn how to use mikrotik :P

completely stumped how I used to move files between it and PC now wanting to make sure i can restore back to old version / config if I have too
the only reason I needed to go back in was to open up an open unsecured wifi connection so I could get a FRP phone to pickup WiFi for original owner to remotely unlock phone and reset ownership ( could not setup wifi with out a pin number ... )

not too sure what I broke but mikrotik can not see the internet .. but its sharing internet to other pc's/mobiles just fine .. maybe i should start it from scratch , i only use it to share wifi

thats really easy. Once you are logged in as admin (full permissions) you can do either:
- winbox -> system -> users -> [select your user] -> change password
- terminal ->
/user set YOUR_USERNAME password=YOUR_NEW_PASSWORD
Or you can just create new user as you probably already figured out...

When you get in, it may be a good time to upgrade.

Hi.
I wasn't using MT v6.43rc7 since a year. But now I have to back to it. My last thing was downloading my newest backup file in November 2018, called MikroTik-20180426-1904.backup.
I just can't remember password for admin account for winbox, so I decided to reset configuration to factory setup.
I have four backup files when only MikroTik-20180502-1304.backup can be restored without asking about password during restore.
MikroTik-20180502-1304.backup no pass
MikroTik-20180516-2359.backup pass needed
MikroTik-20180601-2302.backup pass needed
MikroTik-20180604-1738.backup pass needed
I don't remember if I have ever make a backup file with password.

Running rc7 for a year seems strange to me. Rc are only for testing.
I always use two backup files. One full backup and one export to clear text.
This way I always have some that I can read from if backup file fails.
