MED parameter not applied in a BGP VPN L3 with eBGP for PE-CE communication

Fri Aug 28, 2020 4:43 pm

Hi, we have set up a MPLS VPN L3 network to connect two datacenters for customers private traffic as described in attached diagram and all looks like is working fine but BGP attributes to manage MPLS iBGP preferred routes learned in PEs.

We installed a couple of routers in each location for redundancy in case of failure. We would like to define one of the PEs in each side of our interconnect (PE1 and PE3) as main by controlling the active iBGP learned route in each one. As we have Set up eBGP to connect PE-CE routers we defined SoO filters in PEs VRF definition (It works great to avoid loops) and eBGP rules in CEs to set up MED parameter. When disabling MPLS and not use VRF like a pure BGP routed network on this same scenario, we could see that MED attribute works fine, but when moving to MPLS VPN L3 MED attribute appears in iBGP learned routes in the remote PEs, but does not take effect. ¿Do you know any way to make it work according to our needings? I know that this works in Cisco routers and I think that we’re missing something or I don’t know if this is not possible under Mikrotik environment, but we’re very interested in these type of devices.

Cisco to MikroTik – command translation – BGP
https://stubarea51.net/2015/11/09/cisco ... ation-bgp/

Cisco to MikroTik – command translation – OSPF
https://stubarea51.net/2018/01/05/cisco ... tion-ospf/

Cisco to MikroTik – MPLS
https://stubarea51.net/2018/05/03/cisco ... otik-mpls/
