Modern IBGP design questions

Tue Oct 06, 2020 4:13 pm

Want to see what folks are doing in this scenario.

Two Mikrotik Routers. Each has an ISP pulling in default routes via eBGP.

Are you doing a separate instance to establish iBGP? If so, are you doing "redistribute Other bGP" in the instance? Client to CLient reflection?

in the peer are you doing nexthop choice "force self, propagate, or leaving at default"?
Using route reflect in the peer?

A few thoughts here.

1) You don't want separate instances...that would require redistribution and isn't needed
2) You want a router that isn't a border to act as a route reflector often these are core routers - this can even be out of path like a CHR
3) You need to either set next-hop-self on each border router peering to the RR or advertise the PTP subnet of the upstream into OSPF
4) You only need route reflection turned on at the route reflector - the downstream clients need no special config

Here is a drawing and overview of this type of design with IPv4
