SAME ASN 2 BGP SESSIONS (LOCAL & INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC)

Sat Nov 14, 2020 4:31 am

My provider gives be international traffic and local traffic separately via diff BGP sessions.

I have one /24 block assigned by AFRINIC.
The international session has some routes announced on the local session tagged with a diff community but have very high latency.
Tried weight nothing...
I have tried setting higher loc_pref with the local bgp comm, no luck.
How can i make both session serve traffic effectively without affecting each other.

Shed light mates ;)

What direction do you want to affect?
To select a different path for outgoing traffic, you set a local pref.
To get a different path for your incoming traffic, you can try to use "set BGP prepend" and experiment with a (small) value like 2..4 to force the other end to use a different path.
But essentially, it is the job of the other side to do that using local pref.

My goal is to get local traffic from the local session & International traffic from the Int session.

Each session should give traffic for the routes it gives us Without affecting the other.

Ok in general it can be said that you cannot control how the other side routes the traffic.
You can only control how you route traffic TO other destinations, not how others route traffic TO you.
However, with the "BGP prepend" you can sometimes tweak it a little.
For a proper solution, contact your ISP and tell them how you want them to route to you.

I have prepended the local session.

Getting traffic from the international session.

I have tried setting a higher loc_pref on their local routes community as tehy suggested; but it seems not to work.

What exactly should i tell them to get that working? International routes from the int session and local from the l session?

Can you share the community list for each of the peerings.?

Prepending isn't going to work if you only have one /24

North America (East Coast) 64:1000
North America (West Coast) 64:2000
Europe 64:3000
Asia 64:4000
Africa 64:5000

What I should prioritize via the local session is 64:5000

The rest should come from the Int Session.

asymmetric routing & rp-filter don't go hand-in-hand.

Changing the rp_filter to loose Solved this.

I'll try the No option as another Peer can't seem to follow some traffic engineering rules I set.
