Networking Education

Wed Jul 27, 2011 11:42 pm

Someone I was working with on a project asked me what I thought about CCNA courses. It turns out his goal isn't specifically cisco, but a better understanding of networking in general. What would you suggest for a great way to get a solid understanding of networking fundamentals? I've learned most of what I know simply by tinkering around and solving my own problems/needs.

If someone isn't at the point yet where they even have those need driven scenarios to experiment with, what would be the next best thing for someone who obviously needs a little structure?

Thanks

Miles

In my opinion getting a CCNA would be the way to go. Their training material simply is very thorough. While it is Cisco centric you'll come out of it knowing the fundamentals of TCP/IP in a generic enough fashion that you should be able to apply it to other vendors.

This is genius, because the only people who post on this forum have at least 1 Mikrotik device.

rextend,

would you be so kind as the experienced user of this forum to use "post reply button" instead of quoting post.

Very "clever" ... but you know that I dodn't quote the preceding post?
You know what was the cause of my quotaion but you quoted it again ... like a kid checking how resistant to such behaviour parents are :)

Almost giving up ... it's a dark side of being moderator.
Search for my posts and then comment instead throwing unchecked opinions.
All you need is to press THE DIFFERENT BUTTON ... but without your good will we cant work it out.

Perhaps you should spend more time on convincing Normis to actually make posting here not so easy for bots or posters with no intent but to cause spam.
I read all kinds of posts, and don't really care if its quoted or quoted again, but it provides me with great amusement when some get their knickers in a twist about it.

If you want to dive into the "why" and "how" of networking, Cisco has a great training program that will go deep into the protocols. I am a current CCNA and CCNP and both have helped me immensely in my career - and surprisingly with MikroTik. Understanding how networking works made it a lot easier for me to transition to MikroTik when I first started working with it years ago.

If diving into the CCNA or MTCNA is a bit too much, I would recommend working through the protocols that interest you using this site:

https://gns3vault.com/labs

The labs are setup for Cisco, but I've had new engineers on my team complete them in EVE-NG using CHR (or Juniper, Nokia, etc) to quickly learn protocols.
