SNMP + BGP

Wed May 06, 2015 10:09 pm

I just saw the following in the BGP FAQ at http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:BGP_HowTo_%26_FAQ:
It is not recommended to turn on SNMP on routers with full BGP feed!
Has anyone had a problem with this in practice or know why this is?

Never knew about that recommendation.....
we have multiple x86 routers doing multiple full feeds, and we use SNMP to monitor them.

(too bad that BGP snmp mib is not there.. but monitoring interface and bandwidth has not been an issue)

This is very old recommendation and supposedly fixed long time ago. You should disable SNMP only if you experience problems when SNMP is enabled.

Ok, thanks (you should update the FAQ!)

None should experience problems with snmp on. Unfortunately on devices with 32MB of ram it is quite common to see memory problems and program blacklisting with it...
